Reds Drive Into Ukraine by Eddy Gilmore reports Soviet forces near Rostov and Krasny Liman advancing into Ukraine to threaten Kharkov and Voroshilovgrad while German units rush to shore up positions. Bataisk fell near Rostov per Stockholm source. nine German and Hungarian divisions west of Voronezh appear doomed.
Fire raced through an empty Molson's brewery warehouse in east Montreal before firefighters contained it on a second alarm. Noted by a Dominion Rubber Company guard the blaze gutted the unoccupied structure with damage unrevealed and cause undetermined.
The Left Hand Corner notes a Toronto Telegram critique of the Suez Canal saying brackish means part fresh part salt, like tidal rivers. Guadalcanal endured two raids while US planes attacked Shortland Harbor Vella Gulf and Munda Point. US pilots claimed 12 Zeros two dive bombers three twin engined bombers and possibly a fourth downed at Guadalcanal. Four engined bombers hit a large cargo vessel in Shortland Harbor. Japanese ships were reported in the harbor and observers said a large force of warships might head toward Guadalcanal to bolster ground forces. Continued on pace three.
Mrs. Teresa Bower about 47 was killed when her car was struck at a level crossing by a westbound Canadian Pacific Railway passenger train 30 miles east of Taber. The coroner and BCMP investigated. an inquest jury was empanelled with date to be announced. Mrs. Bower had lived in Taber 12 years with two children in Taber and one in Calgary.
President Roosevelt sends congratulations to Premier Stalin of Russia for the brilliant victory at Stalingrad, praising the armies under his supreme command. The telegram, dated February 5, arrives from Washington and reflects Allied wartime unity during World War II.
Reuters dispatch from Ankara reports Franz von Papen, Hitler’s ambassador to Turkey, recalled to Berlin. Presumably he is to be present at talks with Prime Minister Churchill and Turkish president Ismet Inonu tied to the Adana conference.
The RAF and RCAF joined a major night raid hitting Turin Lorient Spezia and Ruhr targets in Germany Italy and France with heavy damage and three bombers missing. Canadian crews called Turin an easy show and announced Spezia was bombed for the first time this war while Bay of Biscay patrols reported a JU-88 destroyed.
The House and Senate pursue debate on the address in reply to the throne speech. Yesterday's sessions featured Clarente Gills warning of a renewed steel strike if workers demands go unmet, Thomas Reid criticizing farm price regulation, Denise Nielsen criticizing food front attention, and J E Blair advocating open live cattle markets and parity prices for farmers. The Senate passed a bill extending Sir Lyman Duff’s term, paid tribute to Senator Louis Cote, and heard A K Hugessen call for a broader redistribution of wealth and steeper taxes to fund social security.
A letter from Turkish President Ismet Inonu was delivered to King George at Buckingham Palace by Turkish Ambassador Husein Rauf Orbay. Inonu replied to a personal message the King sent, conveyed by Prime Minister Churchill at the recent Anglo-Turkish talks.
Allied air forces blasted German air dromes in Gabes and auxiliary fields, downing 26 German planes and damaging 26 more while losing 10. British troops held Djebel Mansour in Bou Arada, repelling Nazi attacks. US heavy bombers shot down 24 fighters. one American bomber and four fighters failed to return. Five Allied fighters were lost in other raids. Gabes fires lit the targets as Rommel’s corridor remains contested. Shipping patrols and Palermo air actions were also reported with little Libyan theatre activity.
Governor General Pierre Boisson announced that French West Africa will supply 100000 trained Senegalese troops and a reserve of 260000 more if equipment and leadership are provided. He offered Gen Giraud 300000 troops immediately plus 200000 more with officers. He noted reserves lack white officers and left leadership questions to Gen Giraud and Gen De Gaulle.
OTTAWA Feb 5 Clarence Gills urged the House of Commons that the steel strike could spread again if workers demands were not met. He noted 13 500 idle in Sault Ste Marie Sydney NS and Trenton NS after a previous stoppage and warned if full demands were not met within 60 days the strike would resume. Labour Minister Mitchell and others challenged discussing negotiations under way. Nine private members spoke as debate on the throne speech continued. The session also tackled farm price regulation and a proposed food ministry led by Agriculture Minister Gardiner.
Ottawa report on Edmonton’s acute housing shortage presented by Mayor J. W. Pry and City Commissioner John Hudson to Munitions Minister Howe. They urged extending Wartime Housing Ltd powers to aid rapid housing, and easing Edmonton building restrictions or permitting private rental projects for general housing. Howe gave a sympathetic reception and promised early consideration.
