Ottawa announces a radical shift in the national training plan. A four month compulsory period replaces 30 days to maximize manpower for defence and industry. The next camp opens March 15 with 21 year olds now subject to compulsory training unless numbers prove small. Reserve calls of 6 000 to 6 500 men will train with volunteers for active service.
Damascus reports three Syrian Nationalists convicted of the July killing of extreme Nationalist leader Dr. Chahbandar were executed today. The slain figure was said to have been killed for abandoning the fight for full freedom from France.

Two men, Warry and Bill Studhalter, located the missing United States army two motor bomber about 20 miles northwest of Morton, buried in a mountainside near Huckleberry Mountain. The aircraft disappeared January 16 en route from McChord Field to Muroc bombing range. All seven crew members died.
London news bulletin says Britain's coastal command carried out two small scale attacks on Brest in German occupied France during the night. The raid, Brest’s 35th on record, occurred in heavy weather with pilots reaching the target to strike, one British plane missing. British and German raids on the U K were small with no casualties. a German bomber was shot down off the Suffolk coast and two crew were rescued. Middlesex and National Temperance hospitals were damaged in London air raids.
Edmonton February 4 The board of industrial relations issues a new wage order covering hotel workers in towns under 600 residents Affected employees will receive 15 dollars per week The measure follows last year’s inquiry into cafes and restaurants and becomes operative March 1.
Admiral Jean Darlan arrived from Paris and met Marshal Petain with possible Laval return trip negotiation. A source said Laval could become minister of interior and information directing negotiations with Germany, with Darlan as foreign minister and Huntinger as war minister in a proposed directorate under Petain.
Capt. H. B Reid deputy chief of the naval staff has been appointed to the Canadian United States joint defence board. He replaces Commodore L. W. Murray who has served as navy representative since the board’s creation in August 1940. Murray is now senior Canadian naval officer in Britain.
President Roosevelt signaled the government may force armament patent holders to obey orders or face takeover. Investigations show Carl Zeiss and Bausch and Lomb controlled most US military optical instruments under a 1921 Berlin agreement. The arrangement allocated US output to Bausch and Lomb and global sales to Zeiss for twenty years.
A 21 year old Spitfire pilot at 3,000 feet closed to within 50 yards of a Heinkel bomber over the Thames estuary and opened fire in a two second burst. Debris blinded him as the bomber broke apart and its crew bailed out. The pilot’s radio broadcast his exhilaration and shock as the wreckage vanished.
President Batista announced the arrest of Cuba's army navy and police chiefs over a plot to overthrow him. He suspended constitutional guarantees for 19 days, saying conspirators sought control and forced officers to sign a document later destroyed. The armed services were briefed at Camp Columbia and remain alert.
Ottawa February 4. An order in council closes a gap that could let military information cross the border. The Canada Gazette issue states no live pigeon may enter or leave Canada without a special permit.
AIRO Feb 4 British mechanized forces entered Cirene near Graziani's former headquarters about 60 miles west of Derna after Graziani evacuated the city 11 days earlier. The Army of the Nile pressed the retreating Italian units, taking the coastal road from Derna. RAF air raids hit Italian bases and lines, with bombers targeting Barce station and the Berka air base at Bengasi.
Ottawa reports that men who already completed 30 days of compulsory military training under the National Resources Mobilization Act are unlikely to be recalled for further camp service under the four month plan. Prime Minister Mackenzie King announced the extension to four months. A government spokesman said it seems unreasonable to require training twice in one year.
Dr A Cherry of Lethbridge formerly of Foremost has been called up for service with the Royal Canadian Medical Corps. He will close his office and depart to join his unit on February 11. Meanwhile war news reports bombings and global moves continue to unfold.
