The crew had been at work on. the bridge on Monday morning ab-iur, four fours and had come buck the one o'clock. The air hoist on a. flat car had been left oil the bridge. They had coupled on to this flat car and pushed ahead about a car's length when the bridge collapsed. He was riding; in the caboose which went over on its side. There had been only six piers of. the bridge dismantled on the west end. He had given instructions to the engineer in the morning how far out to go on the bridge. He had taken up other bridges in the same way. The bridge and building inspec- that was the handiest arrangement in. which the train could have been made up. It was arranged according to a rule of the Brotherhood of Locomo- tive Engineers. He would, have been permitted to change that if he had known that the bridge was unsafe. In that case he would have had a long string of cars in front. He had no competent knowledge to judge wheth- er the bridge was safe or not. He had been working on the railroad since 1903, had never wrecking before but worked on had been in wrecks. No one had mentioned to bim anything about the bridge being j unsafe. The men were nearly all riding on the flat cars. The man killed was pinned between two fiat cars. He had seen htm there working on his gang.
