George Groszko of Coleman was injured in a bad fall Thursday at the International mine.
A Rotary magazine thought encourages self reliance in the new year. A San Diego tuna boat rescues a pelican nicknamed Pete after a shoreward shot wounds his bill. The crew repairs the beak with bamboo and keeps him aboard as they sail home.
London report says 16 British government departments train 860 students in 17 hours of lessons weekly. The Scottish Office is the only department not represented.
In Ottawa on December 31 France handed Canada a cheque for 12,198,006 Canadian dollars. Ambassador Francisque Gay presented the funds to Finance Minister Abbott in a ceremony marking the first bilateral payment on a 242.5 million dollar loan to aid France after World War II. The payment includes principal and interest as part of a 30 year loan with other European nations also involved. France used Canadian dollars on the New York exchange to settle the payment while Britain prepares interest payments in 1951 on a larger loan.
University of California reported a moderately strong quake recorded at 3 54 22 p m. The epicenter was probably in central Mexico or off the British Columbia coast, some 1050 miles away.
Police sealed Milan after the discovery of a nearly decapitated woman who had married a convicted murderer. The suspect, store Cres centini, 42, was jailed in 1936 for strangling his first wife and later released. The second wife’s body was found scarred and nearly decapitated.
Edmonton reports that a three member royal commission found no evidence of a baby black market in Alberta. It urged trained workers across the province and better cooperation with private institutions, while criticizing Edmonton detention home practices and urging harmonization of city child welfare with provincial policy.

The Communist radio rejected negotiations as dangerous, urging the revolution to continue and warning against a ceasefire or foreign-brokered respite.
Nelson said Creston bookkeeper Harold McKinnon died December 21 after being called from the Creston Valley Co operative store by Mrs McNanny. Jerrard Patrick McNanny already faces a wounding charge in the same incident. A coroner's jury ruled the death came from a knife wound in the abdomen.

Regina reports an interim injunction restraining striking miners from picketing the Estevan coal field has been extended after a reserved judgment. Wage and condition dispute talks are adjourned to January 5.
