Vancouver dispatch reports the Maple Hill unloading 14 Churchill flame throwing tanks for United Nations forces in Korea. Stuart Keate, publisher, announced the appointment as Hodges retires after 34 years as editor of the Victoria daily. Mrs May Areta Beery Port, 82, former wife of actor Wallace Beery, settled her claim against Beery's estate for 400000 dollars. She had sought 1524300 dollars alleging fraud by concealing assets during their 1939 divorce. After taxes the estate totalled 1400000 dollars.
New York dispatch describes Parallel 38 as a phase line not a border, fixed by Allied commanders for military convenience. It became an actual boundary as Soviet and American forces shaped two Korean states, while the U.N. army aimed to defeat North Korean invaders and allow Koreans to form a unified government. The Eighth Army crossed toward the 28th parallel on Oct. 1 as North Korea’s army was largely defeated.
In San Diego California the Air Force has brought back the original B 36 bomber with jet engines added to its six piston engines. Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corp announced the delivery of the first early model bomber undergoing modernization.
