A Toronto resident devised an anti drinking and driving plan by locking his car in the garage on December 23 and mailing the keys to himself in an envelope. He expects the keys to reach him today as part of a precautionary celebration strategy.
In Jerusalem and across the Middle East, at least 22 people died as fighting, bombings, and raids intensified after partition was announced. The day included a Hagann raid on Silwan, Arab deaths, house fires, and Arab attacks on Jewish targets, with British troops restoring order. Hans Beith, a Jewish Agency official, was among the dead.
The Sydney Post-Record reports ORK has started a 120 million dollar steel factory at Port Talbot Wales. In five months 2600 workers cleared the site and erected the plant to be ready in about two years. A 10000 ton weekly limestone quarry operates and 0 miles of track will be laid. High River area reports a missing 74 year old Arthur Parker of Aldersyde after he apparently stepped into a hole in the ice on the Highwood River Friday. An axe was found on the bank and his dog waited at the spot. Parker, born in England, resided in Aldersyde for four years and left home about 6 am. His wife and stepson Harry Mills survive.
A Windsor to Buffalo railway crash killed Dominic Beardeau 72 and three relatives near Tilbury Ontario. Victims include George Beardeau 35 Albert Beardeau 14 and Alex Thikert. The automobile was struck by a New York Central passenger train at a crossing.
