London reports that Dick Barton special agent failed to appear on the show last night as a technical error caused the studio to air no program. The death toll rises to 253 in the Holy Land with 374 in the Middle East as Arab leaders plan new steps. Cairo ministers discuss aid to Palestine Arabs and Arab League moves to recruit volunteers. In Jerusalem reports say regional leaders may meet soon in Damascus to approve plans to crush partition and establish positions inside Palestine.
Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, retired U S Navy chief, was designated by Governor Beauford H. Jester as Chief of Naval Operations of the Texas Navy. The Texan native will oversee duties deemed not burdensome. Texas previously had a small navy of four ships during its war with Mexico in the 1840s.
London Reuters report says Archbishop Geoffrey Fisher issued a statement distancing the Church of England from Dr Hewlett Johnson the 73 year old Red Dean of Canterbury who champions Soviet causes. Fisher says Johnson acts only for himself and that the church cannot control his remarks. Johnson known as Red Dean after telling an interviewer to call him red previously visited Russia and praised Soviet communism noting its supposed religious tolerance and a best selling book on Russia.
In El Monte California on December 16 George Hewset found a small metal container labeled dynamite. Deputy Homer Smith opened the tube and discovered lipstick naming the shade dynamite. The incident prompted a sheriff's office inquiry into the packaging and labeling.
In Mission City British Columbia a five foot dam break nine miles north of town isolated homes and halted lumber mills. The overland flood from weekend rainfall caused the breach. An investigating party said damage could not be estimated for 24 hours as waters subsided.
Washington December 16 union officials of the American Federation of Labor in the Western Union Telegraph System set 6 am EST December 23 as the start time for a country wide strike if called. A United States wide stake vote shows about ninety percent in favor among the nearly 100,000 union members. Representatives will attend a conference in Philadelphia in hope of settling the wage dispute.
Moscow reports new price bands to back a ruble revaluation and rationing end. Zones differ in costs from rye bread at 2 rubles 80 kopecks per kilo to beer at seven roubles per bottle. Wages unchanged, 1946 income cited, and exchange rates noted with implied purchasing power shifts.
Sydney George Chambers, 35, was executed for the murder of nine year old Marian Rusnak in St Catharines Ontario. Convicted a second time after a new trial, he maintained innocence until the end. His body was buried in the jail yard.

Ottawa December 16 Norman Jaques Social Credit member of Parliament for Wetaskiwin said his writings have been banned temporarily from the Canadian Social Crediter official organ of the National Social Credit Association of Canada The ban will remain as Jaques persists in what Gordon Taylor managing editor called an anti-isms attitude He referred to an anti Semitic attitude in his remarks
London reports Britain the United States and France pressed tentative plans for economic consolidation of western Germany. Diplomatic sources say failure of the foreign ministers conference will push faster reconstruction as eastern Germany remains under Russian occupation. Exploratory conversations start at a dinner hosted by France’s Foreign Minister Georges Bidault who signaled openness to merging the three western zones.
Foreign Minister Molotov arrived in Berlin from London en route to Moscow and declined comment on the adjournment of the foreign ministers council. In Vienna Chancellor Figl called a special cabinet meeting to discuss the breakdown of the Big Four talks, with Bidault hinting at possible French plans for a postwar German division and merger ideas among Western powers. In Atlanta a defendant charged with failing to pay a $6.30 taxi bill asked Recorder W. Callaway for time to obtain the money.
