Official civic election box score from Lethbridge shows votes cast for each candidate at every poll and the total voters. Turcotte leads the tally with a substantial margin, suggesting a possible mayoral victory pending final certification.
Efforts to draft plans for a 300 million dollar hard surfaced trans Canada highway will be made at a Dominion provincial conference of technical experts in Tawa on December 14 and 15. The conference will settle the route and funding details with 30 to 40 experts. The federal government may contribute up to 150 million dollars, with 50 percent of road costs covered by the Dominion and provincial partners. If all 10 provinces agree, construction will begin next spring and run seven years from Victoria to St John’s via Prince Edward Island.
EDMONTON Dec 14 Joseph Gilbert 23 year old Edmonton truck Jipper was found guilty of the murder of Sam Kee a North Edmonton market gardener strangled Oct 9. A six man jury returned a verdict of murder with mercy recommended. Justice C C McLaurin set February 22 for execution at Fort Saskatchewan jail.
The Left Hand Corner reports a sharpened water crisis in New York as fountains close and hotels post water use notices. Restaurants serve water on request, residents urged to limit baths and toilet flushing, with inspectors to curb leaks. Continued on Page 14.
In Sofia on December 14, Traicho Kostov, former Communist vice premier, was convicted of treason and sentenced to death by hanging. Co-defendant Ivan Stefanov, ex-finance minister, received life in prison. Nine others were tried on charges of plotting with Americans, Britons and Yugoslavs to render Bulgaria a Titoist puppet. Several others got life terms.
Nancy Hodges will wear the speaker's tricorn when the British Columbia legislature opens February 14. She will receive a $1,600 sessional allowance plus a $3,000 stipend as a coalition member, totaling compensation with duties including ruling on proceedings. She cannot deliver speeches in the house.
The Canadian Wheat Board announced the removal of the five cent per bushel carrying charge on wheat and flour within the international wheat agreement. The maximum price now authorized is 1.98 dollars per bushel for No 1 Northern in store at Fort William Port Arthur or Vancouver.

Contracts cover bacon eggs cheese to end December 31 and the wheat deal runs to July next year. Britain’s appetite for Canadian dairy and meat products remains under discussion. Gardiner’s closing speech is expected to review the talks and hint at future steps in Canadian foodstuffs policy.

Two young farm hands Gavin Patenaude and Kenny Bevin, both 18, were found criminally responsible for the murder of Lucien Brunette, a 34 year old taxi driver. A coroner's jury linked them to the grisly ham mer-slaying near the Quebec New York border after police caught them in a hayloft and the pair led officers to the body.
ETHBRIDGE voters backed the Civic Government Association in municipal elections, giving all three C G A aldermanic candidates seats and re electing Turcotte Huckvale Shackleford to two year terms while Douglas Paterson suffered his third defeat. The 1950 council will include four C G A members with Lakie’s seat expiring next year and Virtue Cases Turner slated for next year’s roster. The council will select the mayor on January 3 after swearing in the new members.
