The House committee on un American Activities reported proof that Russia received 1000 grams of heavy water in 1943, valuable for atomic experiments. It also seeks the Russian born head of a Canadian firm for questioning about 1000 pounds of uranium compounds allegedly sent in spring 1943. A fifth shipment of uranium compound in mid 1944 was deemed a dud. Lt General Leslie Groves urged continued inquiry into leaks of secret data. The inquiry into the Canadian firm chief is being renewed.
Ottawa dec 10 agriculture minister Gardiner told the commons the official UK stance on trade is no Canadian food imports at any price except wheat. He cited price parity with four year contracts at 22 a bushel and said Britain may not renew food contracts this year while discussions continue. Gardiner traced a policy shift two years ago from ample imports to today’s reluctance. He noted last year the UK accepted bacon and eggs under Canadian pressure, but this year declined both.
Brazilian coffee reserves have nearly vanished and poor growing conditions threaten next year’s crop, a U S diplomatic official told a Senate subcommittee. Robert B Elwood said Brazil’s exports rose sharply since July 1949, while Albert M Prosterman cited dwindling reserve stocks as the main price driver.
Winnipeg December 10 Manitoba sugar factory at Fort Garry finished 1949 operations turning 248 million pounds of sugar beets into about 35 million pounds of sugar plus 17 million pounds of dried beet pulp and 8 million pounds of molasses. Beets were grown on 15 500 acres near Portage la Prairie Roland Winkler Emerson and Toulon.
