Prime Minister St Laurent told a federal provincial conference that federal taxes must rise commensurate with the gravity of the international situation. He signalled increases in personal income and corporate taxes to fund higher defence costs amid Communist aggression concerns.
In Ottawa on December 4 Crown and defence argued in police court as Mrs Marion Sullivan 50 of Toronto was granted a third remand in the preliminary hearing for the murder of her lawyer husband. Defence counsel pressed to set a hearing date immediately while the crown defended the delay saying the remand was needed to arrange evidence.

Hard-working mine rescue crews recovered the bodies of two Coleman miners buried last Thursday evening in a coal and rock fall at the McGill vray Creek coal mine in Cleman. Joseph J. Sikora aged 24 was found about five o clock Saturday and his partner George Raipes, 48, was located shortly before seven o clock Sunday. Fire crews worked around the clock under difficult conditions after gas explosions are believed to have triggered the cave in.
An 18 year old woman from Olds and a 20 year old Calgary man flagged down a motorist after crawling through snow to the Calgary Banff highway. They led to a parked car where Mildred Janet Anderson and Allan Edwin Butler, both of Calgary, were found dead from fumes. A second couple in the car were later overcome but not fully, as the vehicle ran out of gas hours later.
Toronto report says seventeen weekend deaths occurred in eastern Canada over the period. Six were traffic victims, three burned to death, with other causes including electrocution, asphyxiation, suicide, drowning, acid burns, a fall, and a bull attack.
In Charleston West Virginia on December 4 police said a young couple signed statements admitting they beat three year old Ida Smith to death after she refused to take medicine for a cold. Murder charges were filed against Junius Ross Smith 27 and Lily May Smith 28. Ida was in Mrs Smith's care since last September after her father left.

Of 1,664,091 eligible residents, 1,504,414 cast ballots as Socialists lost a third of their strength to the Christian Democrats and Free Democrats. The official results show the Socialists at 653,974 votes.
Barons No 1 oil well near Lethbridge started Monday at 9:30 AM after thawing. In the first hour it produced 25 barrels of 32 gravity oil, then tests continued with a smaller choke. A separator froze the prior day delaying the test.
