The St Thomas Times Journal recalls the era when meerschaum pipes were prized gifts and display pieces. People prized ivory white pipes that turned amber with use, admired ornate shapes, and rivaled each other in achieving the perfect browning, though the brittle material often shattered if dropped.
In the Libyan desert fighting lapsed into sporadic raids as both sides reorganize for new operations. A British communique notes continued pressure on isolated enemy centers near the Libyan Egyptian frontier while three Italian tanks were destroyed in a small engagement.

In Manila the first unit of U S transportation men reaches the front to keep Burma road supplies flowing under air protection. The 46 men are under contract to Chiang Kai-shek’s government, joining a cargo shipment valued at 250000 dollars and other war material for Far East forces. Transportation expert Daniel Arnstein advised the assignment.
The Dominion Bureau of Statistics reported that butter stocks at end of September were relatively strong and if output remains steady through year end a sizable winter surplus is expected. Stocks on October 1 stood 9,000,000 pounds higher than a year earlier.
Mr Pattullo announced in Victoria that he will resume the premiership next Tuesday and urged Lieut Gov Woodward to call John Hart former finance minister and Liberal leader to form a new administration. The move follows Liberal losses in the recent provincial election and signals a coalition attempt to offset Liberal minority in the legislature.
Air Commodore Raymond Collishaw of the Royal Air Force has flown back to Britain from Canada. He told reporters he will be on leave in England for some time. Collishaw previously commanded the RAF in the western desert of Egypt and is formerly from Nanaimo, British Columbia.
BERNE December 4 The Havas News Agency reports 1500 persons killed in an explosion at a munitions dump in Onjilja Serbia. The blast destroyed most of the area around the vaults of the Qoujitan tank amid fighting between Communists and Serbian government troops.
Ontario Conservative leader George A. Drew told a New York club that the United States must enter the war while Britain remains strong to avert a prelude to a worse conflict. He argued freedom demands total war and faulted America and Canada for not aiding Britain enough, praising Britain for uniting values and simplicity of life.

Soviet forces declared a major success against Axis troops with a claimed rout beyond Taganrog and the destruction of nearly four German divisions on the southern front. Dispatches said Germans retreated toward Mariupol as harsh winter conditions hampered Russian operations.
Calgary delegates heard a financial resume from Purdy general manager stating the pool elevators hold 1928 wheat stock valued at 645 million dollars. The open meeting reviewed operation status, accounts, and seven district distributions with plans for the next annual meeting.
OTTAWA December 4 17 C W Millard former secretary of the Steel Workers Organizing Committee warned of trouble of serious proportions unless the Kirkland Lake area gold mine strike is settled The statement followed a meeting of 25 delegates representing 15 000 steel workers from Sydney N S Trenton N S Sault Ste Marie Ont and Hamilton The delegates endorsed the strike action for union recognition of the Kirkland Lake miners They pledged immediate cooperation with the strike committee by distributing information and collecting contributions Support assured Whatever support is necessary to assure success will be mobilised Continued on Page Five.

British forces recaptured prisoners after a raid on a northwest German prison hospital. The raid freed several inmates and resulted in the recapture of two escapees. Military officials reported no further casualties.
