The Canadian Press reports proposed government legislation to compel railways and unions to operate immediately and seek a quick settlement. It would require unions to temporarily accept the best offers so far and set up an arbitrator if no deal emerges in 10 days to two weeks. The arbitrator’s ruling would be final and binding.
Argentina devalued the peso for the second time in 11 months. The open rate rose from 9.02 to the U.S. dollar to 14.25 at the start of the day, after yesterday’s close.
British ground troops in jungle dress land at a South Korean port marking the first fighting force from the Commonwealth in the United Nations action against North Korea. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders march ashore to cheers as bagpipes play, with soldiers from Paisley and Glasgow voicing readiness.
Two year old Corinne Baker, daughter of Kenneth and unnamed Baker family, was killed when struck by a backing truck in their Raymond district farmyard 14 miles south of Lethbridge. Granddaughter of Philip and an active farming family, Corinne’s mother Edna Rasmussen is from Lethbridge.

Brandon Man. hospital attendants said J. E. Matthews Liberal member of parliament for Brandon is in very satisfactory condition after collapsing at church. The 81 year old, oldest member of the house of commons, was taken to hospital Sunday and doctors ordered him not to attend the special session opening tomorrow.
Ottawa says striking rail unions will allow the Prince Edward Island car ferry to operate. Spokesman Frank N Hall stated enough workers will be provided to run one ferry between Borden PEI and Tormentine NB, ensuring unrestricted service between the island and the mainland.
New York Aug 29 AP President Truman ordered Gen Douglas MacArthur to withdraw a message on Formosa stirring national debate. Some papers called it a muzzle others blamed MacArthur for foreign policy interference. Several papers printed the text or summary while others withheld details. Front-page reaction in London also covered Truman’s order and the MacArthur statement.
Ottawa authorities report labor groups including the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada and the Canadian Congress of Labor denounce compulsory arbitration. They demand a quick return to normal railway operations and reject forced settlement, arguing it ends collective bargaining and undermines responsibility in labor relations.
Princess Elizabeths newborn daughter will be named Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise announced today. Birth records were filed at Clarence House as Prince Philip accompanied her father. In Calgary on a Monday afternoon a seven year old child named Sheila Evans and an unidentified middle aged woman named Nellie White drowned in the Bow River within an hour of each other. The child was found face down near the shore after wading in a park area. The woman was seen by two men who alerted police. Firemen failed to revive both victims and no inquest will be held.
Calgary unions strike resolution calls for Donald Gordon's immediate removal as president of Canadian National Railways. The Calgary executive committee of 17 unions accuses him of indifference and lack of statesmanship and forwards the motion to Prime Minister St Laurent. Eight Calgary industries lay off about 330 workers.
In Ottawa unions linked to the general rail strike accuse railways of overstating the impact of workers demands on the economy. The letter to MPs questions higher freight rates and cites a five day forty hour week already in use on railways in several countries.
The rail strike will end by tomorrow at the latest, regardless of the government's strike-ending bill. Unions reportedly will resume operations at the earliest possible moment, with Government Bill read in the Commons at 4 p.m. EDT and a special night sitting planned to fast track passage. Prime Minister St Laurent urged swift action as inconveniences from the week-long walkout mount.
