Canada employment figures show near half population employed

The Canadian Bureau of Statistics reports that by May 31 employment reached 4,821,000, up about 250,000 since February and roughly 120,000 above last year. The civilian labor force totals 4,912,000 with unemployment at 91,000, down from February and May 1946. Women exceed 20 percent of workers.

35 Are Killed When Flying Boat Crashes

Nor wegian Airlines flying boat crashed in the Lofoten mountains today killing all 35 aboard. The Sandringham carried 27 passengers and a crew of eight en route from Tromsoe to Stavanger. Chief pilot Capt. Buer was among the dead, along with inspector Jake Ebbesen and several foreign journalists. The plane burned for hours. witnesses heard an explosion in fog and rain. One American woman, plus two Czech journalists and a Dane, were identified among the victims.

Medalla Pottery strike talks urged in Medicine Hat

Toronto Building Topples Over on Church Street

A one year old three story brick building on Church Street in downtown Toronto collapsed early this afternoon after traffic on the artery was blocked. An adjoining print shop was destroyed by debris. No injuries reported. Cellars filled with debris, streetcars suspended. Sam Buchin, tobacco store proprietor, warned police after noting disintegration.

May Force Debarkation of Jewish Refugees in Hamburg

A British official warned authorities could use three degrees of compulsion if 4,400 Jews aboard three British transports refuse to disembark in Germany.
