Ottawa announces Thanksgiving Day will be observed on Monday Oct 12. State Secretary Gibson said a proclamation fixing the date is to be issued and published soon in the Canada Gazette.
Authorities report Stalin agreed in principle to western supervision of Berlin currency, signaling recognition of Britain, the United States and France remaining as occupying powers. Western and Russian diplomats plan fresh Berlin discussions to resolve currency reform, with Moscow meetings seen to shape on the spot talks and new instructions for military governors.
The forthcoming royal tour of Australia will be mapped with care including at least one free day per week and occasional weekends free of engagements. Senator John Armstrong, Sydney's minister of supply, leads the arrangements with hundreds of invitations awaiting responses and expects inevitable disappointments due to limited acceptance capacity. Armstrong is a popular figure with hotel and cinema ties and will manage official and private requests during the visit.

A Timmins bank robbery attempt was foiled after heat drove two men through a wall. In the U S the late August heat belt stretched from the Dakotas to New England with many cities setting new highs.
A provincial government backed venture plans to explore 4,000,000 acres in northern Alberta triangle bounded by Lac La Biche Lesser Slave Lake and Lake Athabasca. Twenty oil firms from Canada and the United States will cooperate to tap Athabasca oil sands with reserves royalty rights held by the province. An age gravity survey will map the area soon as Imperial Oil notes limited funding for the project.
A Winnipeg mother, 21, was detained as doctors fought to save 11 week old Randall Darbell hurt in a fractured skull leg arm and other injuries. The baby was found by his father Michael in a crib and remains in serious condition at hospital. Police arrested Mrs Darbell but no charges had been laid.
In Baghdad on August 26, Assyrian leaders announced that the Assyrian people of Iraq will contribute one division of soldiers to join the Arab Palestine armies.
Canadian officials await word on the McComas shooting as Gustav Wiegner and the victim's 13 year old daughter Louise are in custody. Wiegner says McComas stepped in front of his shot at a squirrel near Blueberry British Columbia. Police investigate with Ohio juvenile authorities seeking McComas's body.
Ottawa reports 57,275 immigrants in the first half of 1948, nearly matching last year’s total. Ontario and Quebec absorb most newcomers, with 103,000 and 31,900 respectively since the war. other provinces show smaller shares as Yukon and NWT see only a few hundred arrivals.
A 19 year old Gladys Ross, a loan company cashier, cried as a robber masked with a handkerchief handed back her engagement ring before escaping with 375 dollars. In Berlin, thousands of socialist unity demonstrators stormed city hall, clashed with police, and sang The Internationale while opposing Western plans for Berlin. No casualties were reported as the crowd dispersed by afternoon.
Belgrade reported Yugoslav foreign minister Stanoje Simic handed the Romanian ambassador a note accusing Romania of urging Yugoslavs to revolt and overthrow Tito. The note singled out Ana Pauker as calling for eliminating the Yugoslav state and said Romanian officials, press and radio have insulted Tito. It ties Romanian actions to the Cominform split and a broader slander campaign against Yugoslavia.
Edmonton Aug 26 The Alberta department of agriculture will push for delaying the downgrade of Red Bobs wheat to a lower grade until a suitable substitute is developed. The degradation was set for Aug 1 1951, but officials ask for a one year extension. Deputy minister O S Longman cited 300 percent of the province's wheat crop being Red Bobs as reason for more development time.
About 120 workers at the Benedict Proctor Company plant voted to accept a general five per cent wage reduction for a month as the plant remains closed due to losses. Employers also agreed to abolish piece work rates for a month, reducing earnings for roughly one third of the workers by about a third.
EDMONTON Aug 28. Thomas Freeman Reid of Edmonton will be tried on a manslaughter charge at the next sitting of the Alberta Supreme Court in Edmonton. Reid was committed to the higher court after appearing in police court. The original abortion charge connected with the death of 19 year old Verne Holman of Sunnybrook was changed to manslaughter last Friday.
Mrs Oksana Kasenkina told reporters from her hospital bed that Soviet persecution destroyed her life after she jumped from the third floor of the Russian consulate on August 12 to escape. She said she planned to quit her homeland for good long before arriving in the United States. She blamed Lomakin and Ambassador Panyushkin for pressuring her and noted her husband disappeared in 1937 and her son was killed in Leningrad in 1942.
Frederick Immring, a garage mechanic, was sentenced to two months for dangerous driving after an 85 mile an hour chase in which police fired several shots. Immring claimed he thought he was pursued by bandits.
Washington Aug 26 congressional spy probers pressed a renewed effort to prove whether Alger Hiss or Whittaker Chambers led a pre war Communist underground in the United States. Chambers and Hiss gave differing accounts of a Model A Ford and other details as perjury warnings loomed. Chambers, 47, Time magazine editor, claimed Hiss belonged to the underground while Hiss denied ties. Hiss accused Chambers of being a self confessed spy and traitor. Nixon pressed for the car’s motor number as investigators planned to trace it.
Edmonton announcements report a ten storey federal office building planned for construction next year with an unofficial cost estimate of four million dollars. The plan was disclosed by Mines and Resources Minister James A. MacKinnon amid other regional updates.
