Moscow reports the Red army has advanced about one third toward Kiev from Kharkov, with Zenkov captured and Zen kov under German pressure. Akhtyrka fell after a seesaw battle as Soviet forces push west toward the Dnieper and Kiev.
The 8th Army News quotes Gen. Montgomery telling Canadian 1st Division he expects to be packing again soon and would like them with him. He praised the Canadians for handling themselves to the high standards of his army during action to the left of Mount Etna.
An Ottawa Journal London correspondent recounts a humorous clash when a mid aged Home Guard member Brown, armed with poor sightedness and double lenses, wrestled a charging bull in a moonlit field. The platoon fled, Brown heroically pursued the animal, and the commander praised his pluck before noting the failed ride home on a bicycle.
Lt General A G T McNaughton told Canadian troops in Sicily they earned the admiration of Canada and the world for their conduct in the campaign. He toured camps with Maj General Guy Simonds and other officers, speaking with officers and men about the drive from Pachino to Mount Etna.
Allied fighters flew a 440 mile round trip at tree top level to Foggia and Taranto, striking airfields and rail yards. They downed 26 enemy planes, with Axis losses totaling 175 aircraft reported. Liberators and Halifaxes supported raids from the Middle East, while ground crews scattered.
Hollywood. Arthur Farnsworth husband of screen star Bette Davis died from injuries after being found unconscious on Hollywood Boulevard. His physician said no clear cause beyond a fall striking the curb base. authorities offered no explanation for the incident.

Grace Buchanan Dineen, 34, a Canadian born woman, and two accomplices were arrested by the FBI in Detroit in connection with the first spy ring uncovered since Pearl Harbor. Dineen trained in German espionage in Hungary before U.S. entry, came to the United States by clipper on October 27, 1941, and was described as attractive and well educated, with French noble lineage, having lived in Toronto prior to Nazi service.
Canada’s capital welcomed President Roosevelt on his first U S presidential visit to Ottawa. He waved to 30 000 on Parliament Hill and rode crowds along a long city drive. In eight hours he completed a packed program including a address at Parliament Hill a memorial ceremony and an official luncheon.
Four German destroyers sank two Swedish fishing boats in the North Sea off the northwest Denmark coast. Sweden1s foreign office warned of an extremely serious incident, amid a spate of German attacks since the Ulven sinking in April. About 12 Swedes may have died as the boats burned after the strike at about 50 yards. Returning fishermen said the ships flew the Swedish flag with blue and gold insignia. The vessels were operating in international waters near the incident.
London reports Lord Louis Mountbatten, 43, named commander in chief of Allied forces in Southeast Asia. The choice signals strong intent against Japan, with invasion likely delayed until after the monsoon. Mountbatten, famed for commandos, is the youngest among the three Allied supreme commanders.
Berlin endured a third RAF Mosquito raid in as many nights with one aircraft missing, while mines were laid in enemy waters. A Stockholm dispatch said civilian evacuation kept casualties down, and Canada’s RCAF noted mine-laying in channels. RAF and US bombers targeted airports in Bernay and Beaumont Le Roger, Rouen power station, with RAF fighters assisting.
Ottawa reports the sixth compulsory labor transfer order brings all men aged 16 to 40 under the scheme. Ex servicemen register but need not change current jobs. however, employers must obtain permits after Sept 8. Workers must register by Sept 3 and be ready for transfer to higher priority work. Further orders promised to cover all listed occupations.
Ottawa reports the Canadian government recognizes the French Committee of National Liberation led by Gen Charles de Gaulle and Gen Henri Giraud. Britain and the U S also recognize the regime as trustee for the French empire. the move follows the two generals forming a united movement three months earlier.
