Tokyo reports a Japanese communique claiming about 200 American troops landed at dawn August 17 on Makin Island near the Gilbert Islands and were repulsed completely. No Allied confirmation appeared. The Gilbert Islands lie near the equator 2,400 miles southwest of Hawaii.
Associated Press dispatch from Algarve province says a fierce naval and air battle rages off Cape Saint Vincent, the southwest tip of Portugal, as of late tonight.
London dispatch reports the destroyer Berkeley was lost in the Dieppe raid on Wednesday. The official communique noted this as the only naval loss despite a fairly large number of landing craft and acknowledged the operation's expected risks.
In a British Commons discussion Sir J Graham Kerr urged a canal across Scotland to link the North Sea with the Atlantic. He argued the route would remove a major barrier to transatlantic trade, save hundreds of miles for ships, reduce voyage time, and avoid fog dangers around the Pentland Firth and the English Channel.
Canadian army camps in Britain recount heroism at Dieppe with accounts from Essex Scottish South Saskatchewan Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Fusiliers Mont Royal Toronto Scottish Winnipeg Camerons Royal Regiment and the Black Watch. Soldiers speak of fearless courage under withering fire and a regimental sergeant major carried waist-high into the sea who was reembarked with comrades staying to aid him. Casualties and unconfirmed names noted as reports unfold.
Relatives were advised that five Essex Scottish officers from Windsor are missing and believed killed in the Dieppe raid. Lt Col Fred B R Jasperson Maj John A Willis Acting Maj David Dezlei Capt Walter L McGregor Capt Denis T Guest were named. The Essex Scottish helped land on the main Dieppe beach and fought through harbour area amid pillboxes and street combats. The 30th Reconnaissance Battalion observed a one minute silence in tribute.
The official communique reports high Allied casualties but notes the Dieppe raid demonstrated sea air and land coordination. It claims destruction of German aircraft, gun batteries, and a radio station, with 170 small vessels sunk and many prisoners captured. Forty-nine aircraft were lost, and 1,5090 prisoners were claimed by Germans. Maj Gen J H Roberts led units from Kingston Ontario along with Rangers French and British forces in a multi‑unit assault involving Royal Hamilton Regiment Essex Scottish Calgary Tank Regiment and others.
Moscow dispatch reports heavy fighting as German forces along the Don bend attempt bridgeheads near Stalingrad. Soviet counterattacks and bayonet charges pin German advances while Red Army guns and tanks repulse assaults from multiple sectors.
Chungking reports Chinese troops have retaken Kwangfeng from Japan after bypassing it in the Kiangsi campaign. The recapture, along with reoccupying Mweiki and Shangjao, ends the threat of the first overland invasion of Fujian Province and regains control of a 60 mile eastern Kiangsi railway corridor.
Allied air supremacy over western Europe after Dieppe raid confirmed with 500 German aircraft losses claimed. RAF, RCAF, and US Army Air Forces backed by Canadian squadrons escorted four engined bombers to Amiens railway yards, with minimal losses. One Nazi fighter shot down. Nazis forced to divert planes from Russian front.
President Roosevelt warned Nazi powers of fearful retribution for barbaric crimes against civilians. He cited hostage killings in axis-occupied countries and said the U S government had received extensive information. He hoped judicial processes would prevail when the freed nations could try those responsible.
The ministry announced the deaths of 87 merchant navy and fishing fleet members, including Geoffrey Dean Williams, first radio officer, Vancouver, B.C., killed through enemy action on various dates, in a Thursday night release from London.
Canadian Press dispatch from England recounts pilots Horncastle Stover and colleagues in the RCAF squadron under Lt. Freddy Clarke reflecting on Dieppe fighting. A crash scare sent Clarke to hospital while the unit chased an FW-190 during dawn action two miles inside France. Continued on Page Three.
London reports that Canadian assault forces with British, French and American units were returning from the Dieppe raid when chiefs of the army, navy and air force began immediate study of lessons learned. Lord Louis Mountbatten, head of combined operations, received all reports from the operation.
Prime Minister Mackenzie King cabled Lt-Gen. A. G. McNaughton to say Canadians share the satisfaction of a telling blow at a Nazi stronghold. He praised the raid as a foremost Canadian achievement and expressed sympathy for the fallen and wounded, urging support for the fighting men.
U S Army Flying Fortresses claimed to have destroyed or damaged six Focke Wulf 190 fighters over the North Sea in a 20 minute battle after 20 to 25 German fighters attacked. Reports also note a Yugoslav sabotage wrecking the Zagreb Belgrade express with deaths, and the sinking of another Axis submarine off the Brazilian coast by U.S. planes reportedly from Brazil.
