The government announced the appointment of Dr. W A Mackintosh of Queen's University as mediator in the railway labor dispute. The move occurred late today and signals official efforts to resolve the standoff between railway workers and management.
Allied forces halted a Communist push north of Taegu, recaptured Pohang and Pohang airfield, and extended control along the Naktong river. U.S. Marines and South Korean units advanced, while Taegu's 500,000 to 800,000 residents were ordered evacuated to convert the city into a military base.
A threatened strike by officers of the 50,000 ton Liberte, formerly the Europa, delays the French luxury liner Liberte on its maiden trip to New York from Le Havre France. The crew seeks higher wages and improved status before departure.
Quebec police said two more people are missing after the river cruise ship Quebec burned, with Gertrude Taub and Eva Taub of Tarrytown, New York not accounted for. Five bodies were recovered from the vessel, which was towed away.
In the Trent River near Campbellford Ontario the Left Hand Corner Women battled a 14 pound channel cat fish for nine hours before finally gaining it into their boat. Fishermen William Archer of Blue Roof Cabins Bradley Bay and Ted Cottrell of Hillman Michigan hooked the fish at 9 45 am and sourced gas from a passing boat. Lunch boats delivered sandwiches and cigarettes as the crew endured the ordeal.
Montreal reports indicate negotiations with 15 international unions on a two hour delay dispute with Canadian carriers have collapsed with no progress. Frank Hall and the negotiating committee met CN Railways and CPR officials but made no further meeting plans.
An official release says Dr. Mackintosh will serve as special commissioner to settle the dispute before the August 22 general strike deadline. He leaves Kingston for Montreal as negotiations continue. Prime Minister St. Laurent’s office announced Labor Minister Gregg can appoint him under the Industrial Relations and Disputes Investigation Act. Both unions welcome a mediator to help reach a settlement.

Ottawa plans expand defence with Canada becoming a major training base for Atlantic pact airmen. The program will drain 108 Western European airmen at a time and grow regular forces to ready home defence and obligations abroad. The move marks one of Canada's largest contributions to pact allies.
Ottawa reports a large number of Harvard trainer aircraft being pulled from storage for overhaul. Canadian Car and Foundry in Montreal is handling the work, with about 160 planes currently brought in. The firm has a history of reconditioning 200 to 300 Harvards under government contract.
Transport Minister Chevrier announced a formal inquiry into the burning of the Quebec four days earlier. Justice Fernand Chequette of the Quebec Superior Court will preside as commissioner with Gerard Lacroix acting as counsel. Date and venue to be announced.

The Justice Department names Morton Sedell, 33, a New York electrical engineer, as an ex naval civilian who allegedly passed national defense secrets to a Soviet ring. He was captured in Laredo Texas, eighth in a roundup of Americans accused of relaying sensitive data. Director J Edgar Hoover noted Sedell fled the U S in June to avoid arrest.
