Air raids sweep Axis from end to end in Britain and Pacific

Allied air forces conducted around the world bombing campaigns on August 18 1948 highlighting a relentless push against Axis targets. British American and Canadian air crews attacked Peenemuende the Berlin area and Balikpapan while Pacific fleets struck Japanese bases at Wewak and oil facilities at Balikpapan. In Sicily Allied commanders praised the campaign's success and pledged continued pressure on German and Italian fronts with reports noting massive enemy losses and substantial achievements by Allied air and ground forces.

C C F Wins In The Pas Election In Manitoba

Beresford F Richards a 29 year old C C F wins The Pas by election, replacing John Bracken who led the Progressive Conservative party nationally. With 31 of 40 polls reported Richards leads by 1 315 over three coalition opponents, giving the C C F four members in opposition and the government 24 Liberal-Progressives 13 Conservatives six independents and three Social Credit members.

Tea and Coffee Ration Increased in Canada

The Prices Board announced a one third increase in weekly tea and coffee rations for Canadians starting Sept 2. Current limits are one ounce tea and four ounces coffee per person weekly. after the raise, 3 ounces tea and 5½ ounces coffee. The change uses new coupons without changing value, and two coupons will become valid every three weeks.

Roosevelt to Visit Ottawa Next Week After Quebec Talks

President Roosevelt accepted Prime Minister Mackenzie King’s invitation and will travel to Ottawa early next week. The Ottawa visit follows anticipated plans for his sixth war conference with Prime Minister Churchill and is part of ongoing Allied high level talks in Quebec. Churchill and Roosevelt opened plenary sessions with top military and political experts to strategize against Axis targets.

Badoglio Reassures Sicilians In Radio Address

New York Aug 18 Premier Marshal Pietro Badoglio told Italians by radio that enemy numerical superiority forced abandonment of Sicily but pledged Sicilians would be returned to Italy. He urged Sicilians not to despair and to keep faith, praising their heroism and assuring they maintain a place in the Italian people’s heart.

Eden Arrives at Quebec for War Conference Meet

Rt Hon Anthony Eden British foreign secretary and Brendan Bracken arrived in Quebec aboard a clipper from Foynes Ireland. They went to the Cita del to meet Prime Minister Churchill and President Roosevelt for their sixth wartime conference. Eden declined to discuss his mission or Moscow plans. The party included Sir Alexander Cadogan and two secretaries.

Allied air cripples Japanese force at Wewak New Guinea

Allied forces mounted a massive attack on Wewak New Guinea where about 225 Japanese planes were caught on the ground by American bombers. Some 122 were destroyed and 50 severely damaged with around 1,500 air personnel killed. The raid used 10,000 bombs and knocked a large portion of Japan s air strength in central New Guinea. Additional raids targeted Vila Kolombangara Baanga and Munda airfields in the Solomons and New Guinea region.

Nazis Fleeing Russ Power

Soviet communique reports German forces retreating near Bryansk under pressure from Red Army advances from the east. Nazis pulled back to within 15 miles of Bryansk though counterattacks with tanks and planes continued, while more than 60 towns east of Bryansk fell to the Russians.

Soviet gains near Bryansk reported in Moscow communique

A Moscow monitor bulletin says Soviet troops advanced four to six miles on the Bryansk front capturing villages and Bervezovka railway station, placing German forces under pressure near the base. The report adds Allied fleets at Gibraltar are easing from the area and signals alert for invasion plans.
