St Laurent asked for a 30 day postponement to resume negotiations. If no settlement by Aug 22 the government would appoint a mediator. Unions representing 34,000 of 124,000 on strike said mediator would be welcome but not ruling out postponement before Aug 22. Progress by Aug 21 would affect moves toward settlement.
In Canada the 15 international unions representing 90,000 workers refused Prime Minister St Laurent's 30-day postponement demand for the Aug 22 railway general strike. They will resume bargaining and declined any mediator mention while urging continued talks after a week-long halt. The move comes as government appeals and union replies shape the stalled labor dispute.
The Que bec cruise ship disaster near Tadoussac Quebec raised the death toll to five after salvage teams recovered two more bodies. The ship carried over 400 passengers and 150 crew members when it burned Monday evening. Initial reports said all aboard were accounted for, but three bodies later surfaced including a man, a woman and a child. One recovered body was described as whole and a South Carolina doctor and his wife were named as possible victims.

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture representing 400000 farmers urged government action declaring railways should be seized and operated as a national emergency if the August 22 strike goes ahead.
National calamity fears from the federation and Canadian farmers over the threatened railway walkout. It urged both sides to settle quickly and warned that a national emergency could be declared if no agreement is reached. Higher railway costs would raise freight rates, harming agriculture as a major freight contributor.
Three and a half month old Albina Mary Macikas, born three days earlier than expected, appeared at a press conference in front of Ste. Justine Hospital. Her mother Mrs. Helen Macikas held her, while Dr. Roman Pniewsky, who helped bring her into the world, looked on proudly as Albina hovered between life and death in the weeks after birth.

In Victoria on August 17, 13 more British Columbia provincial police officers resigned, bringing total resignations to 24 in two days as RCMP assumed policing. Canada’s national parks welcomed 1,045,110 visitors from April 1 to July 31, a 27,593 rise over last year. Waterton Lakes led with 160,333 visitors, Elk Island and Prince Albert parks also showed sizable gains, and gains spread to Cape Breton Highlands, Yoho, and Kootenay parks.
Britain posted a record for dollar exports to the United States and Canada in the prior month with goods worth 61.0 million dollars. The United States bought 31.7 million dollars, well above the five quarter 1946 average, while Canada took 29.3 million dollars, above the long term average.
Winnipeg will host the annual Canadian Good Roads Association convention from September 19 to 21. The event will center on federal control of highway transport with expected lively debate. Transport Minister Chevrier and other federal officials favor regulation in the national interest.
Light frost hit parts of northeastern and northwestern Alberta and western Saskatchewan with minor damage expected to maturing crops. In Peace River, Alberta, and nearby areas frost cut wheat yields by up to five bushels per acre, lowering the projected average from 12 to about seven bushels per acre for grade two to grade four or five wheat. Calgary officials cautioned assessment will take days.
Edmonton reports Premier Ernest Manning of Alberta may be asked to assume official leadership of Canada's Social Credit party at the Dominion convention in Regina October 18 to 20. Solon E. Low currently leads the party in Parliament, with Manning potentially guiding the national campaign to Ottawa.
Aug. 17 report by Hal Boyle says 32 American prisoners were killed on a hill west of Waegwan as Red forces held them with hands tied. Five survivors described mass executions of the wounded and a nearby hill held in combat for three days. A North Korean prisoner captured nearby faces possible war crime charges.
United States delegate Warren K. Austin urged the United Nations security council to compel North Korea to end the fighting, stressing actions over words to prove peace intentions as the council struggled to resolve the Korean conflict.
