Glacier Park Bear Abuses Belton Home in Glacier National Park

BELTON Montana August 16 A Glacier National Park road foreman Jean Sullivan reported a bear entered his home and caused damage. The animal slept in the master's bed opened drawers raided the pantry moved the mattress and blankets outside and hung curtains on a nearby tree. Sullivan quipped that the bear was abusing hospitality.

Defence Co operation talks between Canada and US in Ottawa

Defence Minister Claxton said all aspects of defence co operation were discussed during a two hour meeting with US defence secretary James Forrestal and the Canadian defence committee. Forrestal arrived on a courtesy visit and will leave tomorrow. They declined to give firm answers on arms standardization and Newfoundland bases while noting the topic is under study. Forrestal showed interest in Canada’s merging its three defence forces.

The Ottawa Journal’s London correspondent reports Mayfair eateries overcharging diners with cover fees and "lunch" prices shown as five shillings. Disappearance at Hamburg Courthouse Affects SS Case

Harold Heyns an ex SS sergeant and Herbert Koch faced murder charges for killing two RCAF officers. He disappeared from the courthouse before the trial. The men allegedly killed FO Hugh Birnie of Toronto and FO Donald Jamieson of East Kildonan after bailing out over France in 1944. Authorities note their later capture and detention by Germans. Raymond Tot Dies In Flames When House-Razed By Fire

An Edmonton fire and subsequent investigations report a child died from suffocation as a house burned after a blaze razed the home of Pauline Hague in Ayldon area. Police continue searching for Vera Lindbeck, a 10-year-old missing since Saturday noon after disembarking at Edmonton depot. Parents were away in Lethbridge, with a 15-year-old babysitter in charge during the incident.

News from Jerusalem reports intensified fighting as Arab snipers fired on Jewish traffic on the Judean mountain road two miles west of Jerusalem. Record rye yield at Elm Spring colony shocks observers

A fall rye crop on 100 acres at the Elm Spring Uutterite colony near McNabb Siding Warner district reported 6,400 bushels or 64 bushels per acre. The rye, of excellent grade, was delivered to the Alberta Pool Elevator at McNabb. Colony officials praised the standout summer fallow crop and expected 40 to 60 bushels per acre outturn, but a field check showed 61 bushels per acre, far exceeding expectations.

Alberta Electors Decide Tomorrow in Three Way Race

Alberta voters will choose the 11th legislature with 57 seats, a three way race among Social Credit, CCF, and Liberal candidates. More than 450,000 voters can cast ballots as polling begins at 9 a.m. MST and ends 6 p.m. rural areas or 7 p.m. in Calgary Edmonton Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.

Toronto Motormen Face Trouble As Fare Evasion Sparks Scuffle

Grain and Beet Prospects Bright as Alberta Enters 1948 Harvest

Alberta enters the 1948 harvest with bright prospects across grain and beet crops. Reports from the Heralds fourth monthly crop survey note bumper yields in Skiff and Wrentham, some hopper damage east of Taber, and sawfly impact north and east. Calgary records a fifth traffic fatality of the year after Harry T. Sithes, 73, is struck and killed by a taxi on 10th Avenue East. The taxi driver Brock Dawson, 21, is identified as the operator.

Two Killed When Thrown From Truck on Highway
