Britain's Beaufighter, designed for night bomber action, is built at an astonishing rate due to construction simplifications. The all-metal fighter carries four 22 mm Hispano cannons and six .303 Browning guns, two Bristol Hercules III engines, and a top speed near 330 mph.
London reports heavy RAF raids on Hanover Brunswick and Magdeburg with over 300 bombers. Dutch and French docks attacked. Axis supply ship hit off Netherlands coast. 12 RAF planes lost. Night raids over Britain said to be small scale. 14 Nazi planes shot down. five British planes lost. three Polish squadrons credited with 13 kills.
In Sitka Alaska Aug 15 a 35 foot rock wall collapsed at a quarry serving the U S naval air base on Japonski Island. Six workmen died and a seventh man H W Hagadorn of Tacoma Wash was rescued after five hours under rocks with minor injuries. Three bodies were recovered Ralph J McClure Seattle Dewey Strode of Camas Wash and Ralph Carlson Kingston Idaho. The others were E A Burkley C R Bes and E R Rosser.
The Ottawa Journal notes Seychelles strategic position between India and East Africa. It describes 92 islands, potential uses by Axis raiders via hidden supply boats, and evokes Gordon’s romantic view of conquest as a Garden of Eden. Historical ties show Portuguese maps from 1502 and British settlement beginning 1742, ceded by France in 1814.
Moscow dispatch reports a fourth major Nazi offensive aimed at Leningrad and Odessa, with renewed battles across Kakisalmi Staraya Russa Smolensk and Estonia. The Soviet communique notes withdrawal from Kir Ogrod and Pervomaisk, while detailing a three way push on a front north of Smolensk toward the Baltic.
Cairo reported British Middle East headquarters said a garrison on the siege ring around Tobruk was wiped out by a patrolling force from the Libyan port. The sortie surprised the strong point on the siege line and followed with grenades and light machine gun fire against working parties.
Two government telegrams told the parents of John and Robert Meikle, 24-year-old inseparable twins, that death couldn't part them. They were killed the same day in action on the Egyptian front near Salum.
Josef Jakobs born 1898 in Luxembourg, described as German national, was executed by firing squad at the Tower of London after conviction as a spy. He wore civilian clothes under a flying suit and parachutist’s helmet, carried a wireless set, English money, and an emergency ration. He landed from a Nazi plane in the Home counties, was arrested within 12 hours, and court marshaled August 4-5, marking the first wartime shooting execution. Six others previously convicted as spies were hanged under the treachery act directing military trial.
BERLIN Aug 15 Nazis predicted another fight in the offing in western Ukraine as Soviet troops were not yet encircled between the Bug and Dniester rivers. German sources claimed the troops were doomed by Nazi air forces near the Dnepropetrovsk dams while crossings south of Kiev remained in German hands. The communique cited an encirclement of Odessa and Nikolaev and the Krivoi Rog ore region as key gains, with DNB noting destruction of a large Soviet group yesterday.
Alberta's interim financial report shows provincial net revenues for the first quarter of 1941-42 up by 812,735 to 8,237,760 from a year earlier with ordinary payments down 315,608 to 4,882,574. The period ends with an overall cash surplus of 2,235,450, excluding new borrowings, and net unemployment fees down to 76,317 from 250,859.
A missing Avro Anson bomber was located on the ground at 2 pm local time in Calgary. Three airmen were aboard: Flying Officer I. M S Brown of Vancouver, Leading Aircraftman F W Grenfield of Maidstone Sask, and Leading Aircraftman A M R Mc Gruther of Edmonton. Brown is son of Brigadier Sutherland Brown. Next of kin for the others not yet available. A wide aerial search had been launched after the aircraft went missing Thursday evening, hampered by unknown whereabouts and bushy terrain.
Quebec August 15 Finance Minister Sisley said Canada’s July war expenditures reached about 108 million dollars and running at 3 to 4 million daily. He urged drastic gasoline limits and tighter credit terms to curb postwar risks and warned against overconfidence amid optimism in Canada and England. He noted Churchill Roosevelt Atlantic meeting as a hopeful postwar sign and that Quebecers may grasp the continent’s dangers more keenly.
HALIFAX August 15 President Roosevelts yacht Potomac arrived off Shelburne Nova Scotia last Friday evening for a five day stay. Reports say the president had not been aboard since Saturday. A coastguard cutter accompanied the Potomac with a US cruiser seen nearby. Public whereabouts of the yacht were unknown today. Shelburne lies on the south shore about 100 miles southwest of Halifax.
London reports corrected loss list after a crash that killed twelve Americans, nine Canadians and one Englishman. Captain Mackey of the United States bomber ferry unit was not aboard, though Canadian radio officer G W Mackey is listed among the dead. Arthur Purvis of Montreal is also named among the casualties.
Donald Norman Hannant a 22 year old radio operator with the department of transport died in a returning plane crash carrying 22 on board. Residing previously in Lethbridge and Cowley he had worked as a radio operator in Alberta British Columbia and Manitoba. His parents live at 1490 Myrtle Ave Victoria and original Marshall Saskatchewan residents.
Alongside Mr. Purvis, the list includes 11 captains, seven radio operators, two flying officers and one flight engineer. The dead Fellows named are Rt. Hon. Arthur B. Purvis, Montreal. London and Washington sources report Churchill and Roosevelt plan to send a communication to Stalin proposing a Moscow meeting with war chiefs and Western officials. Discussions would cover supplies to Russia, Allied aid, Red Army position, Siberia, postwar world, spheres of influence, and Western Europe ideology.
Two Canadian airmen from western Canada awarded for bravery by the Royal Air Force. FI Lt C 8S Bartlett of Fort Qu Appelle Sask receives the Distinguished Flying Cross for a mission landing on enemy soil to support Royal Engineers efforts to destroy a strategic railway bridge. Sgt Leslie Smitten of Edmonton, Royal Canadian Air Force, noted for additional acts of courage.
Duke of Kent and party arrive at No 12 Service Flying Training School Brandon after a two hour flight from Regina. Officials including Air Commodore Shearer and No 12 SF.T.S. officers greet them as the royal party tours the grounds in special cars. The Duke inspects an aircraft engine cleaning with steel wool at No 2 hangar and asks questions about workers’ vocations.
The Cuban state department orders six German consuls to depart by Sept 1 as consulates closed for alleged improper activities. Italy also demands the Havana consul Amadeo Barletta leave by Sept 1. he heads an auto agency on the U.S. blacklist.
