Britain faces a steel shortage cutting factory and shipyard output with six priority sectors receiving steel while others go short. Officials warn total supply this year will fall well below 1946 levels, threatening exports and postwar recovery.
The St Thomas Times-Journal notes a small enclosed burial area near Grant's Tomb on the Hudson River bluff. A square marble block bears Erected to the Memory of an Amiable Child, St Clair Pollock who died July 15, 1797 at age five. His father George Pollock, a New York linen merchant, once owned Riverside Drive property. The grave was set aside for a family burial and later cared for by successive owners and the Parks Department.
