Berlin claims massive Red Army losses with almost one million prisoners and tens of thousands of tanks guns and planes seized as Germany announces a new phase of the invasion based on four Hitler headquarters communiques.
In Washington a senate split emerged on extending service for all men in uniform. Majority leaders and key senators backed an 18 month extension after the initial year of training, voting 50 to 27 after defeating a six month limit for drafted men.

An unidentified man about 20 to 25 years old was instantly killed when struck and run over by a switch engine on a spur line in the Canadian Pacific Railway yards in Calgary early this morning.
Nearly 50 pickets at the bound packing plant of Dumaris Ltd in Kitchener Ont were arrested and charged under two sections of the criminal code. They faced wilfully obstructing police and preventing people from working after a Wednesday to Saturday strike demanding union recognition. Bail was refused. Arnold Brunzelow, Local 139 president, was among those arrested. Police said more names would be released later as the clash at the main gate drew around 200 strikers and attempted to stop women employees from entering.
Ottawa Aug. 6 Munitions Minister C D Howe said orders for more than 1000 warplanes are about to be awarded to Canadian aviation plants 400 Hurricanes will be built at Canadian Car and Foundry Fort William plant then Harvard trainers at 80 a month Noorduyn Aviation Montreal has 500 Harvards on order Destination not disclosed but reports say machines may go to United States for lend lease to China Netherlands Indies or possibly Russia The contracts will keep the two plants at capacity
London reports a German radio claim that Churchill arrived in Canada to meet Roosevelt on Canadian soil, while Washington denials label rumors of a secret rendezvous with Churchill, Hopkins, and Mackenzie King as unsubstantiated. British press offered no confirmation of such talks.
Cordell Hull, secretary of state, warned at a press conference that Japan moving into Thailand and the southwest Pacific would threaten American security. He reiterated U S opposition to conquest and emphasized U S interest in Thailand’s independence, saying past warnings about French Indo China bases apply equally to Thailand. He declined to discuss whether the United States has communicated views to Bangkok.

Ottawa Aug 6 Canadian bakers cannot sell sliced loaves deliver special bread or use multi colored wrappers as Wartime Prices and Trade Board extends price regulation to conserve materials power and labor. The board says removal of wheat processing tax should prevent any bread price rise.
In a war review to the House of Commons Eden said Britain warned Japan on July 31 through Ambassador Sir Robert Craigie that intervention in Thailand would escalate tensions. He noted Japanese press rhetoric mirrored earlier threats over Indo China bases and stressed the danger signaled by such messaging.
In Ankara on August 5, Britain reportedly assured Turkey she would enter no postwar agreement with Russia that would infringe Turkish interests. The assurance, delivered by British Ambassador Sir Hugh Knatchbull-Hugessen, came in response to a query by Turkish Foreign Minister Sukru Saracoglu. The report notes continuation on Page Three.
