Allied communique reports Canadian troops have taken Regalbuto at the center of the line, with Capizzi and Cerami seized by U S Seventh Army as forces push toward Messina. American and Canadian gains widen the break toward the Dittaino plain amid heavy fighting and air strikes on Naples.
Lieut Peter Krug a German airman who escaped Canadian prison camps was reported missing from an officers camp at Gravenhurst Ontario after failing to report at roll calls. Krug testified against benefactor Max Stephan in Detroit last year and is linked to a prior escape from Bowmanville camp. Escapes among German POWs in Canada continue with recaptures, deaths, and one notable escape to the United States.
A new table of ideal weights for men aged 25 and older, factoring body build into three classes small medium and large. It shows height based ranges and notes variation due to bone structure and muscular development. Examples include 5 ft 9 in: small frame 140 151 lbs medium 149 160 lbs large 157 170 lbs and 6 ft 3 in large frame up to 200 lbs.
Soviet forces captured two main roads from Bolkhov toward Orel and southwest toward Karachev, threatening German lines to Bryansk and risking isolation of Orel. A Geneva dispatch reported by Reuters via Popolo d Amor shows Roosevelt proposing a seven point armistice plan to Italy. The Axis account lists ceasefire, halt of collaboration, troop withdrawals, material handover, wartime government, war criminal arrests, and release of Allied POWs, amid rumors of negotiations versus unconditional surrender.
London reports Premier Badoglio defying Allied air bombardment warnings while anti-Fascist forces inside Italy reportedly gather strength to aid Allied divisions when defenses are breached. Madrid says Italian Leftists may march on Milan and other centers if Badoglio delays. Cardinal Nasalli Rocca urges no bitterness toward bomb victims. Vatican radio notes anti-Nazi sentiment. British war cabinet met to discuss Italian situation as Madrid notes Falangist-Nazi links strained.
Allied forces press the Munda advance in the Southwest Pacific as US troops push through Japanese defenses near the New Georgia air field. Tanks flame throwers and artillery aided the main thrust, reaching close to the field’s eastern edge while Salamaua in New Guinea faced heavy bombardment.
Ottawa reports the RCAF will open a war staff college at Armour Heights in Toronto in September for air force officers of mid rank. Air Commodore G E Walt will command the new college, with trainee candidates and staff selections already underway at RCAF headquarters.
Prime Minister Churchill reported to Parliament that Canadian troops seized Regalbuto and the American 7th Army captured Troina in Sicily. British warships and planes reportedly sank between 25 and 30 U boats in a three day action against an eastbound convoy. The Admiralty said the main U boat force failed to launch a single attack, with the fight lasting weeks prior amid Allied defense.
The RAF and Royal Canadian Air Force mounted a major raid on Hamburg, delivering the eighth pounding in 10 days. Canadian bombers joined the effort and several planes went missing, including seven Canadians. Mosquito intruders also targeted airfields in Holland and northwest Germany, while Beaufighters and coastal command crews attacked additional Ruhr targets.
