He worked through high school, attended Chicago University winning a Big Ten heavyweight title, earned a law degree with honors in 1931, started a Sidney practice in 1933, was county attorney in 1934, and became the youngest Montana supreme court justice in 1938. Detroit August 2 A UAW CIO proposal for a union management conference on auto industry problems drew rejections from General Motors Ford and Chrysler along with three other manufacturers. GM joined the stance that nothing could be accomplished by a meeting of car makers and union representatives. Despite the rebuff the conference planned for today would proceed with Studebaker Willys-Overland and Kaiser-Frazer taking part per UAW CIO Walter Reuther.
Armed citizens patrolled Athens Tennessee after a six hour siege at the McMinn county jail in a bloody election night clash with about 400 protesters. Six men were seriously wounded and twelve others hurt in the disorder as deputies moved ballot boxes for counting. A bi party All GI ticket challenged the Democratic establishment. The siege ended with deputies surrendering and being searched before being returned to the jail.
The 79th Congress nears adjournment with a late compromise freezing the social security tax at one percent for a year and a last-minute fight over a world court. The House voted for final adjournment while the Senate delayed subjection, setting up a long recess before the new Congress opens in January. November elections will fill all 435 House seats and 32 Senate seats, pushing a campaign season as many of Truman's domestic proposals were rejected, with battles over labor bills, price controls, and military training. Toronto police report a savage hammer and axe assault on West Central McCaul Street left a 35-year-old mother dead and three children wounded, two of them fatally. Suspect 11-year-old Angus Young surrendered after hours of questioning. he appeared in court remanded without plea. Two other children, Donald seven and Joan two, died later or remained gravely ill. Florence three remained critical despite hospital efforts. Police say the mother likely slain in the kitchen as the children slept, with a probable dash from a bathroom window.
