Soldiers break a German picket line as Smolensk enters its 17th day of battle. Russian air force supports ground counterattacks and claims Smolensk remains in defenders hands. Fighting continues in Zhitonir and Novorzhev sectors while Porkhov action is not noted.
Camp San Luis Obispo reports Ray and Reed Johnson, enlisted men and identical twins, were sent to the station hospital for identical operations. The double surgery was performed by Drs. Leon and Jules Comroe, who are also identical twins.
National Steel Car workers in Hamilton agreed to return to their plants at 7 am Saturday following a mass meeting. The decision came after a report by the Steel Workers' Organizing Committee on talks with Prime Minister Mackenzie King and Labor Minister McLarty. Ottawa had sent two officials to negotiate, but they would not negotiate while the plant remained strikebound.

He urged Moslems Hindus and other Indian elements to unite behind Britain's war effort and offered dominion status as soon as practicable. He warned India faces growing threats east and west in coming months.
At Debert Camp troops in Truro Nova Scotia moved through the Frank Elliot amusement grounds last night seeking vengeance for a wounded fellow, destroying the show structure while civilians watched. Rumor of Trooper C Dufresne's death spurred the raid though he had only a superficial gunshot wound. Elliot faced $3000 bail after the disturbance and the ferris wheel remained as the only intact feature.
Chinese and Russian officers held staff conferences to plan joint action if Japan strikes Siberia. Reports said 70 Russian experts of the Far Eastern Red army arrived in North China two weeks ago and met Gen Chu Teh, the Chinese Communist commander, and his staff.
Mexico replies sternly to Germany's request to protest the Washington anti Axis blacklist. Foreign Minister Padilla calls the demand imperious and unjustifiable and vows to cooperate with the United States on wartime mutual problems. Notes exchanged with Nazi envoy Von Collenberg disclose the dispute and Mexico's pledge to safeguard national policy.
The Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line cancelled the 3 p.m. salting of the Heian Maru and prepared to discharge cargo after U S marshals tied her up under five libels filed by east coast importers. The Taruta Maru awaited release to sail home while libel actions against Heian Maru’s cargo were reportedly settled. Asama Maru docked in Honolulu.
Air raid alarms sounded in Cairo Alexandria and Nile delta provinces. An Egyptian interior ministry report said bombs dropped on the delta caused one death and one injury with no material damage. Alexandria near a British naval base had endured heavy raids previously.
E D Flanders Everett Washington conductor on the Great Northern said inquest evidence linked mistaken identity to a head on crash between a Great Northern train and a Canadian National Railways train near Vancouver and New Westminster B C on July 24. Four people were killed and more than twenty injured.
Washington reports the United States accepted Japan’s official apologies for the attack on the gunboat Tutuila near Chungking. Congress weighs the Indo China crisis with the Philippines fate under current law set for July 4, 1916. Senator Warren Austin calls for re-examining the Philippine question in light of recent events and possible dominion status.
Scandinavian radio said Norwegians in occupied Alesund blocked a ship carrying about 70 hostages to a secret departure. Police fled as marines from Nazi warships arrived to quell protests, while crowds stoned police and sang the national anthem after the vessel sailed. The deputy chief hid at the station, leaving only after two nights.
President Roosevelt told reporters Russia’s resistance to the Axis was magnificent and better than German experts expected. He declined to comment on Germany’s top military authority, and noted Russia would not be covered by the lease lend bill until Hopkins returns from Moscow.
