Ottawa on Rideau Street had no snow on Tuesday though the transportation commission pledged to start snow removal after a March 3 board request. In seven weeks the weather cleared the street before the April 24 reply, delaying action.
Ottawa budget debate features George Drew urging a businesslike overhaul of government operations. He criticizes Defence Minister for blocking a House committee study of expenditures and cites Watson Sellar's call for clearer annual financial estimates. Four other MPs speak as the two hour session unfolds.
Senator George B. Jones 84, Progressive Conservative representing New Brunswick in the Senate, died in a Sussex hospital early today. Born in Belleisle Bay, NB, he was a merchant and Teleco director with lumber industry ties. He served as labor minister in 1926 Meighen cabinet and was elected MP in 1921 and again in 1932, 1939, and later summoned to the Senate in 1935.
In eighteenth century Dundee, grocer James Keiler bought stormbound ship cargo of oranges and sugar, his wife’s quince jelly recipe inspiring a family preserve. The marmalade proved popular, steering him from groceries to a Marmalade business. By 1797 his company continued to manufacture marmalade, funding breakfast tables in Canada.
The Red River rose to record levels just south of the border threatening to wash out the Canadian Pacific Railway near Emerson. The Morris hospital was moved from Morris to higher ground while Morris River floodwaters closed highway 75 and a CP bridge clearance near Bradley Coulee. Winnipeg reported a slight rise to 21.3 feet, remaining stable elsewhere along the river’s 100 mile Canadian course.
Montreal April 27 CP One suspect is in critical condition in hospital and two alleged accomplices are under guard after a daylight bank robbery in the northeast Rosemount district. A fourth suspect escaped with 4390 dollars during a 75 mile per hour chase ending in a crash. George Wallace 20 is hospitalized with a police inflicted bullet wound near the spine and may be paralyzed. Eric Mc Donnel 26 and Jean Brunet 25 are in custody. O Rector of Montreal the driver in the crash suffered minor injuries. No police were hurt.
Labor party leaders will shape policy for the next general election at a private weekend conference at Dorking Surrey May 20 and 21. Morgan Philips, party general secretary, said cabinet members, TUC general council representatives and Cooperative Union delegates have been invited.
Prime Minister Robert Menzies opened a drive against Communism by proposing a bill to outlaw the Communist party and bar leading Communists from government and key unions with penalties up to five years in jail. The measure aims to dissolve the party, freeze assets, and bar Reds from security related jobs.
Ottawa April 27 CP Harven Argue CF Assiniboia complained in the commons that correspondence between the federal government and the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan on western irrigation projects was not forthcoming. He noted he had asked six months ago and asked what was being done. Agriculture Minister Gardiner said the correspondence should be completed and brought forward at the earliest opportunity, and the government was not holding back anything.
Abnormally thick ice from a very cold winter delays spring break up across northern Saskatchewan. Lake Athabaska and surrounding waters are reported to be more than five feet thick, according to Floyd Glass Jr., manager of Saskatchewan Government Airways.
Vancouver residents reported a flashing mysterious aircraft Tuesday afternoon. Elliot Merrill of Boeing in Seattle confirmed a four engine B-50 bomber on an experimental flight. Merrill said the plane circled near the International Airport around 4 p.m. and could be traced by sightings from several locations.
Emil G. Sick of Seattle formally opened Lethbridge’s Civic Sports Centre and Fritz Sick memorial pool, a $325,000 project. The ceremony featured ribbon cutting by Mrs J F Anderson and a cornerstone unveiling after a 15 year bid, with Mayor Turcotte saluting Fritz Sick’s help and city effort.
Bridgetown Apr 27 Governor A W Sartage opened the Barbados legislature by thanking Albertas mines minister N E Tanner for visiting the island and advising on projected oil developments. He said Canada’s hard earned oil business experience has been made available without cost to Barbados.
London April 27 reports a British turbo jet locomotive in Swindon making final runs. The swift engine hits 98 miles an hour, blasts air under station platforms, blowing hats and baskets, and splashes soot up chimneys along the line. Locals nickname it the Swoosh Express.

Beef output likely to fall again this year after a large drop last year with estimates of a further reduction.
In London Alberta agent general Rene McMullen urges British oil engineers to export to Canada capitalizing on devaluation. He notes 400 British firms trading in field equipment and says Canadian buyers seek low prices where British equipment can compete despite U S links.

Gerard Bernier, 13, dies in hospital becoming the fifth victim in a tragic family gas leak. Brothers Guy, 14, Bernard, 5, Norman, 3, and sister Mariette, 7, died. mother Yvette and the remaining child Jacques, 16, hospitalised in serious condition. Gas seepage traced to a defective bathroom pipe. inquest planned.
