Military Cross for United Church padre Capt W E L Smith
Captain W E L Smith United Church chaplain overseas has been awarded the Military Cross. In civilian life Rev W E L Smith Ph D minister of Grafton Quebec he has served since early in the war and led by flashlight at Dieppe. He has ridden with Canadian forces since Sicily, aiding the wounded under fire with stretcher bearers. Mrs Smith and their three children reside at Graf ton manse during his absence. He is the second United Church padre awarded the Military Cross, following Major James Brown of the Manitoba Conference.
