London reports a major air offensive continuing into day five with Mosquito bombers striking Cologne in a 10 minute raid between 4 and 5 am. R.A.F. and Allied planes mined enemy waters with no losses and torched Cologne’s rail hub as immense explosions lit the night sky.
Four engine Allied bombers struck rail targets at Bucharest and Turnu Severin near the Yugoslav Romanian border while escorts shot down 35 Nazi planes. Allied losses included 17 aircraft, eight heavies, and 25 Nazi planes destroyed by fighters. crews reported limited observation due to overcast skies. Cesure operations targeted Genoa Livorno Piombino and other Italian ports with rail disruption and shipping fires.
The Canadian Parliament schedule shows the House of Commons to debate war services estimates while the Senate did not sit. Prime Minister Mackenzie King indicated he would leave soon for the empire prime ministers conference in London and that the United Nations financial experts have agreed on principles for an international monetary fund. Finance Minister Ilsley says Hyde Park 1941 financial arrangements have ended and Justice Minister St Laurent notes a proposed Dominion conference to seek amending the British North America Act to let the federal government set retirement age for provincial superior court judges.
The London correspondent notes elephants are again used in military campaigns in Burma linking 1944 with Hannibal era tanks. Elephants load 500 to 800 pounds, travel ten miles daily through thick jungle and aid road and bridge building. O C Wingate earlier used elephants in Burma to haul a printing press for propaganda leaflets.
Washington April 22 Treasury technicians from 34 nations announced a broad outline for an eight billion dollar gold based stabilization fund to restore order in international finance and boost world prosperity. Russia gave initial approval at the last minute. The fund would use gold and currency trades to promote trade and could exchange currency or gold with member nations to support money confidence. The agreement marks a US backed victory over British proposals to limit gold's role in postwar currency stabilization.Continues on page three.
A crowd on Parliament Hill watched nine plaques bearing the winged VI symbol move from the Peace Tower to nine armed forces members, as Maj. Paul Triquet V C and War Finance chair G W Spinney presided. King warned the war would demand months of fierce fighting before final victory, noting Germany and Japan remained formidable and Russia’s advances could not end the conflict. He urged realism, saying victory requires overwhelming Allied power, with war costs at about 100 million dollars weekly, half borrowed from Canadians.
Soviet forces tighten siege of Sevastopol with hills seized and passes stormed as Red Fleet reports swift flanking success. In Poland’s Carpathians and Stanislawow area German attacks are repelled by Soviet artillery and anti tank guns, with losses noted on both sides.

Dive bombers and Chinese divisions in Burma reported engagements and attempts to cut off Myitkyina while rail lines and air routes support operations.

Officials said Hyde Park financial links with the United States end, but co operation in war production continues. an $8 billion international monetary stabilization fund principles were agreed. Proposals to amend the British North America Act to let federal fixation of provincial judges’ retirement ages were to be discussed at the Dominion provincial conference.
Berlin dispatch reports on the Thussian front restructuring with Walther Von Model taking a key post, replacing Fritz Eric Von Mannstein in the Carpathian sector, and Schoerner replacing Ewald Von Kleist. Mannstein’s new position is unspecified as Von Model presses toward Moscow.
A German, 35 year old Richard Hoffmann, was executed in Kongsberg for listening to British Allied radio. The command announced the punishment via a German press dispatch received in Madrid on Friday April 22.

Cherry Valley New York April 2 A pilot named Robert Wavle from Glens Falls survived a crash when his aircraft struck the hillside at 1.0% feet high. He escaped the wreckage, walked to a nearby farm for aid, and suffered injuries described as minor.
A British submarine rescued American Lieut. Dale Klondike Klann after his downed plane in a 15 minute raid near Sabang Sumatra. Twelve Hellcats protected the sub as Japanese destroyers and coastal guns fired. sixinch shells splashed nearby while Klondike was hauled aboard amid intense anti aircraft fire. Royal Navy crews and American pilots earned high praise from commanders for risking lives to save the flyer and complete the mission.
Blairmore George Doncaisne a 40 year old single man died Friday afternoon in Blairmore hospital after injuries from an accident at Greenhill mine. He was found unconscious at bottom of a coal chute, partially covered in coal. Transported by Miners' Union ambulance, he died about three oclock. Funeral plans await inquest called by Coroner D MacPherson.
London reports intensified Allied raids with bombers and fighters over Germany amid a 74 hour surge totaling about 25 000 tons of bombs. Berlin broadcasts name American aircraft and note large air battles near Hamm as raids extend from northern France toward the Reich.
