Britain launches new one pound coins on Queen Elizabeth II's 517th birthday. The round gold-colored coins replace green notes, weigh 8.5 grams, and measure two centimetres. They are worth about $1.54 in U.S. currency and affect purchasing power.
University of Lethbridge officials say they are pursuing recovery of a 1.9 million investment with Greymac Trust Co whose assets were seized by the Ontario government. University vice president of finance Alan Rae notes no current cash flow issues and expects a possible return, while adding details from university lawyers remain undisclosed. In Iwamizawa two sets of identical three day old twin boys were born to Taeko Hane and Eiji Hane. The four babies are in incubators and well, nursing milk every three hours. Pediatrician Masanori Be said the twins were not conceived with fertility drugs and doctors expected twins. The birth occurred Tuesday at Sorachi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital in Iwami zawa, 650 kilometers north of Tokyo.
The one percent federal sales tax increase effective Oct 1 1984 is expected to add about 60 to 70 dollars a year to average household spending on consumer goods, though critics say the bill could reach 100 to 150 dollars.
