Paul McCartney Ordered to Pay Maintenance in Paternity Case

A West Berlin judge ordered ex Beatle Paul McCartney to pay 290 dollars a month to Bettina Huebers, 20, as provisional maintenance in a paternity claim filed last year. The ruling allows a possible blood test and notes payments may be recouped if the suit fails. Meanwhile, a separate report notes two bodies found at a convicted murderer’s former home in New York, with authorities suggesting up to 23 more may be buried nearby.

County blocks second rural house removal action

The County of Lethbridge plans legal steps to enforce removal of a second house placed on a 22 acre Picture Butte parcel without a permit. Development Officer Paladino ordered removal within 60 days, the owner let the appeal period lapse, and council may pursue charges or a court restraining order to compel demolition or relocation.

Daryn Castleton competes in Kiwanis Music Festival solo

At age 12 in Taber Daryn Castleton competes for the third year in the Kiwanis Music Festival. He was the lone performer in the 12 and under solo scene and also entered poetry readings. He plans drama teaching and acting, says practice is his fault, and he enjoys swimming and other sports. Results are on A2 and more photos on A3.

March inflation cools to 7.2 percent annual rise

Ottawa reports March inflation at 7.2 percent, down from 7.4 percent, the lowest since February 1977. Energy costs lifted the monthly CPI by one percent, while the three month annual rate rose to 2.8 percent from 2.1 percent, amid debate over which measure best reflects trends.

Separate trustees accept staff cutting policy

The board for the separate school district approved a staff reduction policy amid trustee predictions that it will be used in upcoming negotiations with teachers. Trustees Bob Kolesar and Frank Peta stressed the policy will guide program and job cuts as provincial funding declines.
