London April 16 The Royal Navy has gone into action against the Axis threat to Egypt, the admiralty announced tonight, and Italian German operations on the Libyan coast are being constantly harassed and repelled.
Colima, capital of Colima state, suffered severe damage as a major earthquake struck southern Mexico. Governor Pedro Torres Ortiz reported widespread destruction, with water and electricity cut off, looting fears mitigated by patrols, and about half the 15,000 residents homeless. Federal troops recovered dozens of bodies and injured, while hospitals received medical supplies. recovery and casualty figures remain uncertain across seven affected states.
Belfast and surrounding towns were hit by a large Nazi air raid lasting four hours. The bombardment destroyed hundreds of working class homes while hospitals churches and newspaper plants suffered damage. The raid sparked fires and panic as ground defenses fired flares and recruiting offices faced a crowd of anxious locals.

New York April 16 A P Domei Japanese news agency broadcast a Bangkok dispatch claiming attacks by British troops along Thailand s Malayan frontier prompted a protest from the Thai government to British authorities. No details of the attacks were given.
In Valona harbor Albania the Royal Air Force sank a 6000 ton merchant ship and a 7600 ton ammunition vessel during raids on the night of April 14 15. The RAF Middle East command also said the Royal Italian forces cut the German line of communications in Yugoslavia by destroying the main bridge over the Vardar at Veles and damaging transport on the Veles Prilep road.
Washington reports a tense debate over using the U S Navy to convoy war supplies to Britain. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee, split along party lines, delayed action to April 30 as administration forces seek to shelve Sen. Tobey’s proposal.

CBS correspondent Leigh White reports Belgrade suffered devastation akin to Rotterdam and Coventry. He estimated about 3,003 killed by Tuesday, after German bombers struck the Yugoslav capital last Sunday and Monday. White noted Yugoslav forces recaptured Sopot and isolated a German panzer division with 103 tanks in a Lepant river valley counterattack.
Winnipeg April 16. The Manitoba Social Credit League announced eight New Democracy MPs from Alberta led by John H. Blackmore are in Manitoba campaigning for nine Social Credit League candidates in the provincial election set for April 22. Rev E G Hansell of Macleod is among them. The league opposes Premier Bracken's coalition.
Inspector H Darling of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is transferred from Halifax to Regina and will depart for the new post immediately in a routine move. Darling has served since 1911 with assignments in Halifax Ottawa and Letheridge Alberta.
Cairo dispatch reports British forces in Greece now in contact with German units along the entire front. Despite vigorous mechanized thrusts, Germans have not reached main British Greek defenses, as Greek troops withdraw to new positions in western Macedonia. Heavy losses inflicted on German mechanized forces before retreat. Reinforcements reported at the new defense line.
London reports commander at a fighter station praised the Commonwealth air training plan. J J Hodgson noted the air force would win with planes and men as needed. He said the wing commander lauded new airmen as equal to any in the force.
