Reports say Yugoslav forces captured the port of Durazzo as Allied and Axis lines clash. Battles near Phlorina Greece and Bitolj line the southwest front with invaders pressing an early assault and counterattack south of Belgrade.
British and German dispatches report heavy fighting near Tobruk Libya with Axis tanks and infantry crossing outer defences and allied counterattacks near Salam. British sources caution about Tobruk garrison status as Italian high command notes continued defense.
Moose Jaw Sask April 14 Ray Good 21 of Moose Jaw died in the flaming cab of his oil truck at Boharm seven miles west after colliding with a Canadian Pacific Railway passenger train at a level crossing. Good apparently was trying to stop his truck when it nosed onto the Fair road just in front of the train. The truck was thrown down the embankment and caught fire.
London correspondent reports a comic episode in Paris where a British officer, disguised as a peasant on a bike, fools German troops and Stasi officers. A farmer provides the outfit, a pig is buried, and a German sees a “British officer” in Flemish guise, prompting amused approval. Readers are told the tale continues on page four.
The Associated Press reports that Russia and Japan signed a neutrality pact in Moscow, pledging to stay neutral if either is attacked. Observers call it the boldest diplomatic move since the 1939 Moscow-Berlin accord, tied to Matsuoka’s European tour.
KINGSTON Ont April 14 A Royal Air Force trainee LAC J M Bearcon of Southport England was killed when a training plane crashed near Collins Bay. Fellow officer Fit Lt J A Time of London England was seriously injured. both were stationed in Canada under the British Commonwealth Air Training plan. The crash occurred as the cockpit caught fire and the plane attempted to land a mile from the Worman Rogers airdrome. Reardon was thrown clear and believed killed instantly while Tinne, found in the wreck, was taken to hospital in satisfactory condition.
London reports a Norwegian warship allied with British forces raided the German-held northern coast of Norway yesterday. The raid may be the second landing on Norwegian soil in days, with earlier operations cited including one that began March 4 at the Lofoten Islands. German agency DNb says a British destroyer landed near Tromsø, occupied a fish packing building, removed supplies, and burned the building, with poor weather cited for limited air attack.
London critics slam official statements downplaying German advances toward Egypt and Suez. The Evening News denounces vague assurances as futile while warning that German forces aim to seize Alexandria and threaten British power in the Mediterranean and Balkans.

Ossining New York April 14 Two long term convicts who shot their way from the Sing Sing infirmary in a sensational break that cost four lives were captured hours later in woods across the Hudson River The two convicts still armed with smuggled guns and a confederate who was slain had broken from the prison during a battle that left a prison guard and an Ossining police officer dead and a convict patient dying of shock They were cornered on Mount Hood in Palisades Interstate Park by a woodsman patrolman and others trailing them They were flushed from cover and continue on page three

They are expected to discuss Canadian United States relations and methods to aid the United Kingdom and Allied forces, likely focusing on cargo carriers under lease arrangements.
From Toronto a report says the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation harshly criticized Premier Henburn’s Ontario leadership at a Dominion provincial conference held at Sirois Resort on Orze. The resolution reflected a tremor in CCF ranks as the party faced internal dissent and public displeasure over provincial policies.
WINNIPEG April 14 Sixteen coalition backers from the last legislature were acclaimed as non partisan administration returns were assured with 19 opposition candidates for 39 seats to be contested April 22. Liberal Progressive premier Bracken and five cabinet ministers were re elected without opposition.
Idle since March 31 McGillivray and International Coal miners at Coleman resumed work after a complete agreement between mine management and United Mine Workers officials. A referendum vote endorsed the decision 649 to 13 with four spoiled ballots. Angus Morrison, 31, L.A., was mentioned in the report.
Berlin reports late tonight claim the British expeditionary force is starting to leave Greece as troops board ships at multiple harbors and along open-sea coasts. A British withdrawal to new positions was announced, noting severe casualties inflicted on the Germans and continued pressure on the eastern sector.
