Argentine ex-president Galtieri jailed after Falklands row

Former Argentine leader Leo Galtieri arrested in Buenos Aires and ordered to face a military court of honor after critical interviews on last year’s undeclared Falklands War. He started 60 days detention at a garrison as protests describe his falling from power.

Walesa questioned by police in Gdansk

Lech Walesa leader of the outlawed Solidarity movement was detained for questioning about a weekend meeting with underground activists. He was released after nearly five hours and returned home in Gdansk. Police had seized him earlier saying he would be informed later of details.

Arsenic in Waterton gas plant waste water shut in

Alberta Environment officials say no drinking water standard was violated despite arsenic in waste water from a Shell Canada gas well near Twin Butte. The well was shut in March 22 after arsenic levels rose in the effluent ponds. Drywood Creek tests remained well within limits. Shell and provincial officials maintain no health risk while residents and an NDP leader call for more disclosure.

Mackasey Named As Lobbyist In Quebec Contract Scheme

Witnesses at a bankruptcy hearing testified that Liberal MP Bryce Mackasey was a lobbyist paid to aid a Quebec company in securing government contracts. The testimony was previously kept secret during the Hall Stee hearing. Gazette correspondent William Marsden spoke to the Commons committee. Washington seeks faster hot line with Moscow link

The Defense Department proposed upgrading the Washington to Moscow teleprinter hot line to near instantaneous transmission and to add other emergency links. The old line, created after the Cuban missile crisis, now carries about 60 words per minute. The plan includes full text blocks and the ability to send maps and charts.

Chicago elects black mayor in symbolic victory

Harold Washington won Chicago’s mayoral race to become the city’s first Black mayor. With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Washington led 656,727 to 617,159 over white Republican Bernard Epton, as turnout hit a record 82 percent with broad coalition support. Washington pledged fairness and a revitalized city for all residents.

Man charged in jewel theft in Lethbridge

A 25-year-old Lethbridge man, David William Urson, was charged in provincial court with break-in and possession of stolen goods after a $100,000 jewelry robbery at a Lafayette Boulevard residence. He reserved pleas and returns April 28. he was released on his own undertaking. The safe remains missing. Insp. Terry Wauters announced that the jewelry was recovered.

Vancouver man confesses to 11 year old Billings murder

Kenneth Chisholm of Vancouver told District Judge Diane Barr he confessed to the 11 year old Billings murder and armed robbery because the case had tormented him and his family. He surrendered in Lethbridge on Feb 4 and pleaded guilty to first degree murder and robbery. sentencing set for May 12. He said the shooting of bartender Otto Moos was accidental during a struggle while trying to rob the Billings fare.
