Moroccan Held In Murder Of Leading PLO Official

A Moroccan man, Al-Awad, 26, resident of Casablanca, is held in connection with the killing of Issam Sartawi, a leading moderate PLO official who advocated peace with Israel. Sartawi was shot five times at a Socialist International conference in Estoril near Lisbon.

Bayclub crewmember lost as ship cabin fire rages at sea

A Panamanian bulk carrier Bayclub suffered an engine room blaze in the mid Atlantic. One crewmember was lost and presumed dead while the master remained aboard and the rest of the crew were accounted for. Coast Guard reported no further details. All-time high unemployment in Canada and Alberta rise

Canada reports a nationwide March jobless rise with 1,658,000 unemployed. In Southern Alberta unemployment jumps to 9.3 percent from 8.7, with 18,000 jobless of 172,000 employed in the region including Lethbridge Medicine Hat and Red Deer. Provincial rate 12.3 percent. Alberta job market shows slow turnaround in March

Edmonton based minister Ernie Isley says Alberta's economy improves slowly with unemployment at 12.43 percent in March up from 11.6 percent in February. He notes 4,000 new job openings as participation rises and forecasts the job market will stay in double digits for a while.

Good neighbor John saved Enchant water supply

John Loewen and neighbors worked all night to pump water from his farm dugout to Enchant hamlet’s town supply when the reservoir ran dry. The irrigation district cautioned it cannot replenish until May 20, and a meeting will decide how to expand the system and possibly compensate Loewen and pump supplier Randy Howg.

Unexploded Bomb Paralyzes London

A 50 kilogram German World War II bomb found along the River Thames halted central London for three hours. Police sealed roads bridges and subway stations near Waterloo Bridge while workmen and Army experts defused the device causing massive rush hour traffic around Parliament Whitehall and central government districts.
