Irrigation project in Canada expands with weather return

Construction on the St. Mary MilK Rivers irrigation project in the Lethbridge district gains momentum as favorable weather returns. More than 3 million dollars has been allocated this year and about 2.75 million already spent, funding development that will irrigate about 513000 acres south and east of Lethbridge once completed.

Tweed with scent to go on sale in 1949

A Geelong woollen mill in Australia tests injecting a faint “whiff of the bush” into tweed. Chemist devised a lasting perfume to be applied in final scouring, planned for market early in 1949 and nearly finalized by managing director Cedric Hirst. The scent should be subtle and unnoticed when worn, but detectable from the cupboard.

Call Tenders for Main Canal Across Irrigation Project

The Herald reports L B Thomson of Regina, director of the PFRA, says tenders for two sections of the St. Mary Milk Rivers main canal will be invited within 10 days. The route runs from East Pot Hole Coulee to Ridge near Raymond, then Chin Coulee and toward Taber Irrigation District. Thomson cites no settlement on Bow River talks with Canada Land and Irrigation Co. No date set. a meeting at Valux Hall April 13 will be attended by federal agriculture minister J G Gardiner to discuss the Bow River project and farm funding commitments.

Train collision damages CN yard near Woodstock

Woodstock Ont April 7 two freight trains collided head on just east of Wood stock station causing heavy damage. Brakeman F T Clarke was taken to hospital for X ray and checkup with injuries not believed serious. Railway officials launched a probe into the accident today.

Seven Killed In Auto Crash Near Brandon Manitoba

Seven persons, four men and three teenage girls from Brandon and nearby areas, died when their car struck a stationary snow plow on the highway three miles south of Randon Manitoba. Victims include Alvin and Elmer Grieve, Bernice Jackson, Jean Karnes, Pearl Stevens, Jack Hodging, and Kenneth Foster. The car owner was identified as Alvin Gruye.

Greece asks UN protection against attacks

In Athens on April 7 Greece appealed to the United Nations special committee on the Balkans seeking protection against unprovoked attacks. Greece alleged Albanian guerrilla involvement in the Grammos region and Bulgarian support for new threats in Eastern Macedonia. The note claims 3000 re armed communists crossed from Albania and accuses neighbors of ignoring UN recommendations to restore diplomatic relations and frontier conventions.

Tokyo reports the top money maker in Japan last year was money-lender Masamitsu Moriwaki with an estimated income of 90,000,000 yen. He claims loans of 150,000,000 yen and says he has no cash to pay taxes, prompting a ministry complaint.

Claxton and Drew clash in Commons over RCAF planes

Ottawa April 7 Progressive Conservative leader George Drew demanded Defence Minister Claxton resign over allegedly misleading the house about RCAP storage. Claxton admitted an error denying the charge after a Globe and Mail photo showed four planes in hangars at Downsview with wings and tails off. He said planes were held in reserve for emergency use and that removal of wings and tails was to economize space.

Resumption of Civil War in China grows from ultimatum

In Shanghai the Communist radio urged immediate resumption of China's civil war, accusing the government of building armed might during the truce. It urged Reds to cross the Yangtze, wipe out the Kuomintang army, and capture war criminals. The broadcast cited 1,000,000 new troops joining the Nationalist army to 3,500,000. Acting President Li Tsung Lin reportedly rejected the ultimatum. If concessions fail, war may resume.

Fishing Craft Lost In Gales Off East Coast

HALIFAX April 7 Two small fishing craft with three men aboard are missing after gales swept the Maritime provinces disrupting communications. The RCAF search and rescue unit plans a hunt in the Bay of Fundy area as the storm moves northeast from New England toward Labrador. Some districts report rain others snow while sleet clings. clearing skies and milder temperatures are forecast later today.
