Allied heavy bombers hit Bucharest causing major rail yard damage as German supply trains burned and fires raged. Reports say 46 bombers and three fighters were shot down, while Berlin claimed 44 Allied planes fell. The raid followed earlier Balkan bombings including Budapest and Sofia.
British and Indian forces report a 15 mile stretch of the Imphal Kohima road held by Japanese as Allied efforts fight to maintain a supply line. OTTAWA April 5 A service man's letter posted in Britain was delivered to his Beaverton Ont family the same day thanks to a fast trans Atlantic flight five hour time lag and everything clicking Post Office officials call it very unusual but note mail delays can occur The Canadian airman boarded the transport bomber as it left for Canada the plane made a rapid flight reaching Montreal in time to connect with a Toronto express and the letter was then delivered to Beaverton that day

Agriculture Minister J. G. Gardiner told reporters in Regina on Tuesday that farmers with livestock should ensure they retain enough grain on the farm to feed their stock for one year after August 1, 1944.
In London a US Negro pilot narrowly averted catastrophe for Britain’s air leadership in Italy. As 9th Negro Fighter Bomber Squadron planes lifted with two 500 pound bombs, a motor failed, the craft crashed 20 yards away into a ditch, the bombs scraping the ground. Privates and air marshals ducked for cover as the frightened pilot quipped about going to heaven with high powered company.

Scotland Yard detectives raided the British section of the Fourth International on Harrow Road, Paddington, amid linked strikes and government warnings. Officers seized files from Socialist Appeal as Bevin warned strikes will not derail the war and coal supplies falter.
Stockholm dispatch cites Aftonbladet saying eleven thousand Berliners were killed in the last two raids on the German capital. The report notes a Bayer concern on Kurfürstendamm was reduced. Bellevue and Coleman burglars raided two safes overnight. In Bellevue drug store the safe was unlocked and narcotics jewels war savings stamps and Victor bonds were stolen before a car stolen from Austin was used in the getaway. The car was found near Blairmore. In Coleman the safe at the pharmacy was blown and cash vanished. RCMP investigators continue.
Diplomatic reports from Budapest say Admiral Nicholas Horthy regent of Hungary is being held prisoner in his Budapest palace. He is guarded by Hungarian Nazis under German Gestapo command. The claim notes a tense situation amid wartime power shifts in Hungary.
Hollywood legend Charlie Chaplin was acquitted by a federal jury on Mann Act charges after a trial that began March 21 in New York. Acquitted Chaplin relaxed publicly as 24 year old accuser Joan Berry dismissed the verdict, and his fourth wife Oona O'Neill praised the outcome while noting her anticipation of a child.
