The Laura Standard reports court actions scheduled for Friday in Crystal Brook on June 22 1934 detailing local legal proceedings and agenda items.
Between 1843 and 1870 the Boogoolie Sheep Run lands were resumed for settlement. The Laura Jockey Club hosted racing after pre 1879 efforts by locals, joining with Gladstone’s course in 1884 for two meetings, amid high stakes and financial strain after the Great Northern Club’s collapse.
The Laura Jockey Club began after a meeting on April 23 1874 with secretary Jas Spicer and first president William Wilson. The club planned races for June 20 and 6 events were set including Handicap Hurdles and Laura Town Plate. Attendance was about 600 but heavy rain left the east end a quagmire as five horses fell. Officials included Wilson, C S Cook, A Ferguson, T F Jones, D L Golding, and Spicer. The first meeting yielded a profit of £30 and a next race date was announced amid applause.
