Kamloops Growth Linked to Rail Route and Early Development
Kamloops rose as a key railway hub in the decade, chosen to host the Canadian Pacific line down the North Thompson to Kamloops and onward to the coast. By 1878 telegraph service arrived, with contractor F. J. Barnard and Premier Alex Mackenzie overseeing the work. The town boasted three stores and hotels by 1880, a small clergyman presence, and early transport feats such as the Peerless steamboat operating between Cook's Ferry and the Bonaparte head of navigation, showcasing Kamloops's budding infrastructure and significance.
