Tobacco growing viability in Ashford district discussed

Ashford Tobacco Growers' Association received a ministerial letter summarizing expert Mr. J. Tregenna’s view on growing tobacco in the Ashford area. He says light sandy soils of granite and basalt origin can produce tobacco comparable to elsewhere in Australia but irrigation is essential due to risk. Soils rich in humus should be avoided for high fertility. He notes soils of basalt/trap-rock origin have supported good tobacco on other farms with proper soil management. Only by testing curing smoking qualities can a definite opinion be formed, and the department suggests trials first to determine feasibility before wider planting.
