Miss Mercedes Gleit e, an English marathon swimmer, wins the Manty baths durance swim finishing in 4 hours 1 minute. Mrs Catering Nehou, a Moor woman, places second in 47 hours 6 minutes and Miss Lily Coppestone of New Zealand takes third in 40 hours 7 minutes.
Defence Department in Sydney Moray considers further drastic economies in the department. Agreed plans will probably save more than one million pounds annually. Believed to involve a complete reorganisation of the existing travel, military and Wr branches of the service.

SYDNEY Mon day A mysterious stone throwing terrorised residents of Smith Street Balmain for over a week and resumed last night with renewed violence. News spread through the district as hundreds gathered to trace the attackers who hurled stones into backyards and onto rooftops but were not seen.
Thomas Power, 31, a Griffiths farmer in New South Wales, was hiking above the Gorge at Bright Victoria when a shifting boulder toppled him. He toppled over the cliff into the water six feet below, was rescued, and died an hour later at the hospital.
Melbourne report says Delly Morse and her little brother were cleaning a hut where an employee kept a loaded pellet rifle. The rifle discharged and the bullet struck the girl in the heart region. She ran toward the house and died minutes later at hospital.
A fire at Gulargambone yesterday destroyed four shops and the commercial bank along with the kerosene. All were wooden structures except the bank. The damage is estimated at about £15,000.
A mass meeting of Aus tyle's Railways Union backed a general strike in protest at a ten percent cut to Federal award rates. Resolutions urged depot and job committees in each district and direct representation for strikers on the disputes panel. The Niemeyer wage recommendations were cited as a major trigger and the Federal Government was accused of betraying workers over compulsory arbitration.
Frederick Larkin a 22 year old powerful swimmer from Parramatta Park encountered difficulties while bathing in the river. He was brought to the bank in an extremely serious condition and suffered shock before dying.

Police raid on a house at Park Street in Melbourne uncovers tobacco packs valued at £2600 as the theft proceeds from a burglary linked to W Lewis of Flinders Lane. Three men were arrested and charged with breaking and entering.
