Parson Sterne’s parishioners learned of his marriage to Mrs Sterne on a Saturday morning. They packed the church for his sermon the next day, hoping to see the bride. Sterne’s text, We have toiled all night and have caught no fish, drew mixed laughter and serious faces as Mrs Sterne blushed through the crowd.
A humorous episode details the composer Handel’s sharp irritability and a wit who entered the orchestra to untune instruments before a performance for the late Prince of Wales. The prank lowered some notes by up to a whole step, disrupting the musical balance as instruments were tuned beforehand to spare his nerves.
