A special Canberra committee opens inquiries into Australia’s wheat supply and emergency storage. It will assess storage capacity of 100,140,000 bushels and explore inland centres to prevent deterioration from vermin and pests, with a proposal to allocate excess world price to farmers and a reserve fund.
The Horsham Waterworks Trust met to discuss Farth Avenue water service with 10 per cent work return subject to State Rivers and Water Supply Commission approval. A 6 inch fibrolite main replacement was proposed for Wawunna Road. Sunnyside Avenue extension awaits sufficient revenue. accounts totaling £148 14s 2d approved for payment.
Horsham pupils face a packed Youth Week with church services and town tours. Activities include Longerenong College tours for high and convent school students, a Horsham State School open day, Armoured Car Regiment demonstrations, Rotary Club luncheon, and a Horsham Theatre matinee for all schoolchildren.
State Rivers and Water Supply Commission reports storage total at 1,367,170 acre feet out of 2,447,360 capacity nearly normal after two months of rain. Compared with 1986 figures, holdings are down 7,780 acre feet. Melbourne area water supply teeters at 40 percent, with 11,281,298,000 gallons available and a goal of 20,100,000,000 gallons. Restrictions ease in some regions though Wimmera and Mallee remain restricted.
Rev. H. Linton announced a project with 24 youths who will settle on the land after training on fara. He spoke aboard the Or monde on Monday, outlining steps toward retirement in six years and the program’s aims for agricultural self sufficiency.
In Melbourne on Thursday Charles Arnold, a former boarder, was sentenced at General Sessions to 12 months in gaol for damaging articles at Kenneth Jevarr’s home. Judge Tulge Richardson called Arnold’s conduct deliberate, spiteful and cruel, with no excuse for his actions. The Crown alleged Arnold resented a failed romance with Mrs. Serine.
