The New York Independent reports that about fifty farmers from Solomon, Kansas area formed a cooperative grain buying company last summer. The members, spanning multiple parties, include 90 percent of local grain raisers with yields from five thousand to twenty thousand bushels.
The group formed a farmer owned elevator with 2500 capital and one vote per member. They paid 14 cents below Kansas City prices, then matched market margins to cover costs, and after rival buyers pushed higher prices the co op secured 80 percent of local wheat. Dividends reached 50 percent, spurring many similar cooperatives.
A marriage occurred at the residence of the 44 parents on December 2 in 191l. Pryde and Jean Lorimer, both of Hamiota, were joined in matrimony with a small congregation present.
