Province Offers 743000 as Harness Racing Support
Muriel Smith announces a Manitoba program to back a fall and winter harness race meet at Assiniboia Downs. The plan provides 5 percentage points from the 7.5 per cent pari mutual tax for purses and breeders through December 31 1982, then 3.5 per cent thereafter, plus full 5 per cent tax on wagers on three or more features. Total funding about 743000 with track takeouts rising to 12.7 per cent as wagering declines. The move aims to keep winter racing alive while ownership issues at the track are resolved.
