New low level crossing over Assiniboine opens near Miniota
The Echo reports the new low level crossing over the Assiniboine River south of Miniota is open. Local memories recall the old 1892 bridges and 1942 accident when a span fell into the river, killing one passenger. subsequent bridges were removed, and a modern steel crossing was built in 1949. The article notes prior improvised crossings and credits late brother Charles with inspiring the idea, which culminated in a 1975 76 upgrade and a wider 60 foot long structure now serving truckers and residents on both riverbanks. The route is accessible via a turn near the Miniota Cemetery and offers a scenic winter approach.
