The Miniota Municipal Fire Department handled seven fire emergencies over 52 hours from August 27 to be 29, including grass and bush fires at Bill Higgins Crandall farm and Argue properties, stubble and trailer fires near Rus Howards and Beulah, with help from Hamiota and Birtle brigades. Fire crews faced high winds and spread to hills and ditches, and were commended for prompt action and efficiency.

Surprise party marks anniversary
Sixty friends gathered August 19, 1984 at Don and Eleanor Hawkins home in Lavinia to surprise Ken and Ivy Hawkins on their 30th wedding anniversary. A boutonniere, gifts, and a supper prepared by Graham Jamieson followed a toast by Harold McLaren. Out of town guests came from Langenburg, Tisdale, Brandon, Winnipeg, and Carman. The couple married August 20, 1954 in Hamiota and have one son, two daughters, and two grandchildren.
