Hamiota Pentecostal Church marks 40th anniversary celebration

Hamiota Pentecostal Church celebrated forty years of ministry during Thanksgiving weekend with an 11:00 a.m. service featuring past ministers and members. Betty and Bernard Miller attended with daughters and grandchildren. A plaque honoring David Beck for sanctuary carpeting was presented to Rev and Mrs Beck. Everett Gurr summarized the church’s history from 1944 to 1984. Speakers included Bill Griffin, Pastor Beck, and Rev Taylor with special music by Audrey Gurr and others. Soup and sandwiches followed, and an informal Monday service allowed members to share thoughts.

Studded Tires Authorized In Manitoba

The motor vehicle branch of the Manitoba Department of Highways and Transportation reminds motorists that studded tires may be used in the province. Tires with studs may be placed on vehicles on October 1 and must be removed by April 30 next year.

Strathclair Drama Club to stage Fiddler on the Roof

The Strathclair Drama Club will present Fiddler on the Roof in 1985 with performances March 27 to 30. Rehearsals begin January 1985 and auditions for all ages start November 1, 1984 at 7:00 p.m. at Strathclair Community School Multi-Purpose Room.

Hamiota Legion Auxiliary Meets in October 1984

Hamiota Auxiliary held a 24 member meeting October 23 1984 chaired by President Eileen Brown. Minutes read by Frances Kirkpatrick. Future events include church march November 11 at 10 45 a m and a Birch Lodge party November 13 with lunch. Petty fund won by Elinor Coombs. Poem from Flanders Fields recited with two minute silence for J Anderson.

Hamiota United Church Marks Centenary Celebration

Hamiota United Church observes 100 years with a centennial on Sunday November 4 1984. A thanksgiving service at 11 00 a m features guest speaker Rev Ken Emmons from Brandon Central United Church. A sacred concert follows at 7 30 p m.

Hamiota Curling Club hosts mixed cash bonspiel

The Hamiota Curling Club opened the 1984-85 season with a mixed cash bonspiel from October 26 to 28. Sixteen rinks competed in a fun, competitive weekend. Brian Taylor from Hamiota won first in the first event, with Dave Simpson of Shoal Lake taking second and Mervin Simpson of Virden third, while Ross Fraser of Hamiota earned fourth. In the second event Brent Strachan won, Garry Kidd was second, and Garth Strachan led the third with Vicki McGhee second.

Alpha Temple 20th Anniversary Celebrated

Alpha Temple No 12 Pythian Sisters marked twenty years with a banquet Oct 17 in Virden. Grand Chief Barbara Gibson of Edmonton and Sister Vicki Ford of Innisfail attended during her visit, ending with Yorkton district convention on Oct 20. Mae Elder presented Manitoba Crocus corsages. Grand Chief Barb chose Friendship as her motto and addressed the Sisters. Grand Sessions set for Innisfail April 28-30, 1985. Andy De Beer named Pythian of the Year at Yorkton Oct 20.

50th Anniversary Celebrated for Mr and Mrs Mitchell

Arrow River marks golden wedding with Oct 17 84 family dinner at Pump and Pit Virden on actual anniversary day. Attendees include three daughters and their families, two sons, and grandchildren from Rapid City Brandon Ottawa. A Come and Go Tea followed Oct 20 with 200 guests and wedding mementos on display.
