Feeding Bees For Winter Preparations At Manitoba College

Beekeepers should start winter food prep for a strong spring. A V Mitcheter advises 15 to 20 pounds of sugar syrup per colony, made from two parts sugar to one part water, heated to dissolve sugar. Use 10 pound friction top honey pails with perforated tops and upside down syrup delivery, then top with an empty super and hive cover. Sugar syrup digests readily and helps bees in cellars through the long winter.
