Letter to Steinbeck Echoes Regret and Reading Memories
Bill Hall, editorial page editor of the Lewiston Idaho Tribune, reflects on his lifelong admiration for John Steinbeck. He recalls reading The Grapes of Wrath in school, his delayed plan to write to Steinbeck, Steinbeck's death, and a later passage from The Winter of Our Discontent that links insomniac wakefulness to guilt and belief.

Seniors see investment income fall as rates slide in Canada
Statistics Canada reports a 15.1 per cent drop in 1992 investment income for families with at least one spouse aged 55 or older, down to an average of 8568 from 10086 in 1991. Manitoba ranks high in senior population share, with varied median incomes by age. Investments provide about 13 percent of seniors' total income, with pensions and employment covering the rest, while safety in bonds and GICs contrasts with rate volatility.
